TALLAHASSEE, Fla. — The South Dakota State men's cross country team officially toed the line Friday morning for the first time since taking fourth at the 2019 NCAA Midwest Regionals. SDSU would go on to finish 16th out of 20 teams, including nationally ranked opponents from No. 6 Iowa State, No. 12 Stanford, No. 13 Colorado, No. 22 Southern Utah, No. 27 Utah State and No. 30 Syracuse.
SDSU opened their 2021 cross country campaign by knocking off UT-Martin (11th in the South), Florida (8th in the South), Charleston Southern (13th in the Southeast) and Liberty.

Ben Olson led the Jackrabbits (currently ranked eighth in the Midwest) in the men's 8,000 Garnet race to finish 83rd in the field of 143 runners. The junior Coon Rapids, Minn. native turned in a career-best 8,000 time of 25:02.3. His previous best was a 25:35.9 ran back in Sept. 2019 in the SDSU XC Classic.Â
Right behind Olson,
Thomas Breuckman finished 85th with a mark of 25:03.5 and
Gabe Peters turned in a time of 25:15.6 to take 93rd. In his SDSU cross country debut, Kansas City transfer
Max Selbach ran a 25:23.4 to take 97th while
Joseph Minor-Williams finished 105th to round out State's top five with a time of 25:36.7.
Mason McDonald (126th, 26:01.4) and
Michael Schwinghamer (131st, 26:10.4) finished sixth and seventh for the Jacks, respectively.Â
South Dakota State keeps their eyes fixed on the Summit League Championship March 5 in Macomb, Ill. where the team will chase its fifth consecutive league title.
