South Dakota State women's soccer looks to build off of its strong start to the season when it hosts South Dakota March 19 & 21.

Now entering the second half of the 16-game spring season, the Jacks are coming off a thrilling weekend in which they tied with Denver March 12 and won on a second overtime golden goal March 14. Despite giving up their first goals of the season, the Jacks were able to give Denver its first tie and loss of conference play.

South Dakota State is coming off a 15-5-2 season in 2019, which included winning the Summit League Championship and making its fifth appearance in the NCAA Tournament. So far in 2021, State is 4-0-2.

About the Jackrabbits
In eight matches played in 2021, the Jacks have held strong defensively, recording six shutouts in eight games. SDSU leads the Summit League in goals allowed with just two. Splitting times between the pipes is the duo of
Hailee Fischer and
Taylor Lock, who have combined for 20 saves. Defensively, the Jacks have held opponents to 64 shots this season.

Offensively,
Eden Brooker was named the Summit League Offensive Player of the Week after hitting the game-winning shot against Denver on Sunday and recording an assist in Friday's tie. Brooker now has two goals on 14 shots this season. A week after scoring four goals in the two games vs. Kansas City,
Maya Hansen found net once again Friday for her team-leading fifth goal of the season. In addition to Brooker and Hansen,
Adalaide Kline recorded a goal which tied the game at 1-all in the second half of Sunday's win.

Kayla Wisniewski is tied for second on the team in goals with two while four other Jackrabbits have hit a goal this season.

SDSU has attempted 108 shots with 48 of them being on goal. Leading the team in shots is Hewitt, who in 507 minutes played, has fired 10 shots on goal in 19 tries. Hewitt ranks first in the Summit League in shots per game (2.38). Eleven other Jackrabbits have recorded at least four shot attempts so far on the season.

State outscored its opponents 29-8 in 2019 and had a Summit League record 15 shutouts, ranking third nationally in shutout percentage. The Jackrabbits averaged 14.3 shots per contest, putting 126 of their 314 total efforts on goal. Defensively, SDSU limited opponents to 10.4 shots per game and allowed only nine goals for the season, including five in the final 17 games.

Returning for the Jacks is the reigning Summit League Freshman of the Year
Maya Hansen. A sophomore from Savage, Minnesota, Hansen finished second on the team in points (18) and goals (seven), along with four assists in her first season as a Jackrabbit. Hansen posted five game-winning goals in 2019 and started 20 games for the Jacks. Hansen earned spots on the All-Summit League Second Team and the Summit League All-Freshman Team in 2019. Highlighted by her big weekend against Kansas City, Hansen has 11 points, five goals and an assist through six games in 2021.

Karlee Manding enters her junior year with the Jackrabbits after making the 2019 All-Summit League Second Team in 2019 and the Summit League All-Freshman Team in 2018. The midfielder from Waipahu, Hawaii has 20 career points and eight career goals over 2,000 career minutes. Karlee and her sister Kaycee have combined for eight shots, three assists and five points this season.

SDSU brings back all three of its line of defenders to give the Jacks experience defensively.
Kaitlin Zabel was a member of the 2019 All-Summit League First team while
Gabby Vivier-Hannay was named to the 2019 All-Summit League Second Team. A senior from Winnipeg, Manitoba, Vivier-Hannay earned Summit League Defensive Player of the Week honors after playing 177 minutes in the two shutout wins at Oral Roberts.

South Dakota State travels north to take on North Dakota State for a two-game series. Start times are set for 6 p.m. March 26 and 1 p.m. March 28 in Fargo.Â

Scouting the Coyotes
South Dakota is 2-3 on the season and sits in seventh place in the Summit League standings. After splitting their season-opening series against Kansas City, the Coyotes lost their next four contests before sweeping Western Illinois March 12 & 14.

USD is fourth in the conference in shots and shots on goal with 98 total shots with 41 being on goal. Defensively, the Coyotes have allowed 10 goals in eight games played (1.25 per game).

Shaylee Gailus leads the team in both points (7) and goals (3). Alexis Mitchell and Taylor Ravelo each have two goals and five points. Mitchell leads the team in shots with 16, followed by Joana Zanin with 15, while Taylor Cotter is right behind with 14. Three Coyotes, including Cotter, have two assists this season.

Dana J. Dykhouse "Futbol" Stadium
This weekend's series marks the sixth and seventh game SDSU soccer has played at Dana J. Dykhouse Stadium. Before the four games this season, State's game vs. Eastern Washington on Sept. 13, 2019 was moved to the stadium due to wet field conditions at Fishback Soccer Park. The Jacks defeated Eastern Washington in that game, 1-0.

The week of home soccer events, it will be determined no later than Wednesday whether Fishback Soccer Park or Dana J. Dykhouse Stadium will be the home venue, based on weather forecasts and field conditions.Â

SDSU (5-0-3, 5-0-3 Summit League) pushed its unbeaten streak to eight games, earning a heard-fought victory on a cold and windy day at Dana J. Dykhouse Stadium. The Jackrabbits held just 10-9 edge in shots over Denver who fell to 8-2-1 overall and 8-1-1 in Summit League play.

In addition to her goal, Brooker led the Jackrabbits with three shots (two on target), while
Rachel Hewitt recorded two shots, including one on goal.
Adalaide Kline was responsible for the Jackrabbits equalizing goal, while Regan Anderson was awarded an assist on the game-winner.

Hailee Fischer started between the pipes, recording two saves in the first 45 minutes before
Taylor Lock replaced her at the half.

In a back-and-forth first half, Denver held a 4-3 advantage in shots, but neither team were able to score.

Denver took the lead on a goal as the Pioneers' Sami Feller scored on a long ball from Taylor Parker in the 66th minute.

The Jackrabbits took advantage of its first corner kick of the match to tie things up in the 75th minute. While the corner kick appeared to be cleared by Denver, Kline netted the equalizer on a shot from 30 yards out sending the contest to overtime.

Denver controlled play for the most part in the first overtime period with two corner kicks and the lone shot in the frame.

In the second overtime period, the Pioneers had another pair of corner kicks in the 104th and 105th. A Denver free kick found the head of Regan Anderson sending the ball to Brooker who took a strike from 30 yards out that banked off the left post and into the goal to give the Jackrabbits the win in the 107th minute of play.
