ST. LOUIS, Mo. -- South Dakota State running back Isaiah Davis was honored Sunday as the Missouri Valley Football Conference Newcomer of the Week after leading a potent Jackrabbit rushing attack in a big victory over fifth-ranked Southern Illinois a day earlier.
A freshman from Joplin, Missouri, Davis rushed 22 times for a career-high 150 yards and scored three touchdowns in South Dakota State's 44-3 road win at Southern Illinois. Filling in for injured starter Pierre Strong, Jr., Davis scored a 3-yard touchdown in the second quarter, then added scoring runs of 1 and 45 yards in the third quarter in leading a Jackrabbit rushing attack that rolled up 392 yards on the ground for the game.Â
It was Davis' second 100-yard game this season as he ran for 118 yards on only nine carries against Western Illinois on March 6.
The nationally ranked Jackrabbits, 4-1 in league play and overall, are now scheduled to return to action April 3 at North Dakota State. The Jackrabbits' March 27 contest versus Illinois State has been canceled after the Redbirds announced they are opting out of the remainder of the spring season.
