Jim Iverson is a pivotal figure in the history of South Dakota State University athletics, leading the Jackrabbit men's basketball program to the 1963 NCAA Division II national championship.
Iverson served as head coach for nine full seasons (1956-65). His teams won five North Central Conference titles, three NCAA Tournament regionals and the 1963 national crown. He was named National College Division Coach of the Year in 1963 as well.
A Mitchell native, Iverson starred as a student-athlete at Kansas State, starting at point guard for the 1951 Wildcats squad that advanced to the national championship game. He was selected by the Boston Celtics in the second round of the 1952 NBA Draft.
Iverson died October 26 in Fort Wayne, Indiana, at the age of 90.
A memorial service has been scheduled for Wed., March 31, at 11 a.m. at Abiding Savior Lutheran Church in Sioux Falls. A time of visitation, with family present, will begin at 10 a.m.
