JACKRABBITS FALL LATE AT WESTERN

MACOMB, Ill. – Western Illinois pushed a run across in the bottom of the eighth inning and held off South Dakota State, 4-3, in Summit League baseball action Saturday afternoon at Alfred D. Boyer Stadium.
WIU improved to 7-13 overall and 3-4 in league play. The Jackrabbits dropped to 7-12 on the season, including a 2-5 mark in The Summit League.
Neither team held more than a one-run lead in the contest, starting with SDSU cracking the scoring column in the top of the third. After the first two Jackrabbit batters were retired, Jess Bellows recorded his second hit of the game and Luke Ira and Ryan McDonald each walked to load the bases. Bellows later scored on a wild pitch.
Western Illinois grabbed a 2-1 lead in the home half of the third, scoring twice after a walk and two singles.
SDSU knotted the game at 2-all with a run in the fourth as Drake Frazier plated Drew Beazley with the first of his two hits in the game.
The Jackrabbits regained the lead at 3-2 as Garrett Stout drove in fellow Pierre native Landon Badger with a sixth-inning single.
The Leathernecks tied the game one last time in the bottom of the seventh inning on a Kevin Raisbeck RBI single, then took the lead for good an inning later. Luke Schwartz began the rally with a leadoff walk, moved into scoring position with a stolen base and advanced to third on a groundout before coming across with the game-winning run on a wild pitch.
Raisbeck and Toby Allred each tallied two of Western Illinois' seven hits.
SDSU starter Cody Carlson finished with a no-decision after striking out six and allowing two runs over 5 2/3 innings. Eli Sundquist took the loss as he pitched the final 2 1/3 innings for the Jackrabbits.
Leatherneck reliever Jack Carberry earned the win after striking out four and walking three in 3 2/3 hitless innings.

The two teams are scheduled to play the series finale at 1 p.m. Sunday.
