South Dakota State women's soccer hosted its second-annual GOALD Game earlier this season, partnering with the Sanford Health Foundation to raise awareness and support during National Childhood Cancer Awareness Month. In total, SDSU raised $2,843 for the Cure Kid's Cancer program at Sanford Children's Hospital!
"We are extremely appreciative of all the support with the GOALD Game and the Jackrabbit soccer community's investment in bringing awareness to childhood cancer," head coach Brock Thompson said. "It's a humbling experience to witness families fight this terrible disease, and our program is proud to donate nearly $3,000 to the fight to end childhood cancer."Â
GOALD Game t-shirts were sold at $10 each, with all proceeds benefiting the Sanford Health Foundation. Cubby's Sports Bar & Grill also provided a pregame tailgate with a free will donation.Â
Prior to the game, the Jacks hosted honorary captain Evan Henning to participate in the pregame coin toss. More on Evan's story can be seen below and in this YouTube video. Â
Jackrabbit goalkeeper Hailee Fischer was a driving force behind the GOALD Game, organizing the events in honor of her cousin, Ian. More information on Fischer's story can be found here.Â
Honorary Captain – Evan HenningÂ
It all started with a fever…Â
In January of 2019, four-year-old Evan Henning and his family were enjoying post-Christmas life. But soon after, life as they knew it would change forever.Â
That January, Evan started running a low-grade fever followed by night sweats. Within nine days, and five doctors later, he was diagnosed with Burkitts Lymphoma, a very aggressive childhood cancer. Evan's cancer was everywhere, with spots from the top of his head to the tip of his toes.Â
Chemotherapy was started immediately. Evan and his mom spent eight months in the hospital. With the help of the amazing doctors, nurses, and pharmacy team, Evan had his last dose of chemo on July 7th, 2019.Â
Evan is now a happy, healthy and very energetic 7-year-old who enjoys playing soccer with his sister Adelynn and brother Eli. He has been in remission for two years!Â
