SIOUX FALLS – Gavin Wheeler swam his way to two more event titles and five other Jackrabbit men claimed individual events as South Dakota State closed out competition in their regular season finale at the Coyote Invite Saturday at Midco Aquatic Center.
After winning the 200-yard individual medley on Friday, Wheeler won the 100 breaststroke in 57.34 seconds Saturday morning, then claimed the 100 IM in 50.99 seconds during the afternoon session.
Wheeler also took fourth in the 400 IM Saturday morning with a time of 4 minutes, 21.71 seconds, placing behind teammates Austin Smith (second, 4:13.73) and Parker R. Brown (third, 4:14.77) as the Jackrabbits notched three of the top four spots in the event.
Damon Venner added to his list of event titles on Saturday by winning the 200 butterfly in 1:53.64 on Saturday after winning the 500 freestyle on Friday. The Sioux Falls native also finished as runner-up in the 200 freestyle on Saturday (1:42.73), coming in second behind teammate Alex Kraft (1:41.21).
Rafael Negri led SDSU in the backstroke events, winning the 200-yard race in 1:57.65 during the afternoon session after clocking a third-place time of 51.20 seconds Saturday morning.
The Jackrabbits' other two event titles came on the diving boards as Spencer Fritze won the 1-meter competition with a score of 272.25 points and Zach Boyd earned gold on the 3-meter board with 269.85 points. Boyd also was runner-up on the 1-meter board with 261.25 points.
SDSU closed out the unscored meet by claiming the 400 freestyle relay. The quartet of Matt Sorenson, Sam Johnson, Marcus Benson and Charles Sieglaff combined for a winning time of 3:09.20. Sieglaff placed third individually in the 100 freestyle (:46.24), as well.
In addition, Collin Schock finished as runner-up in the 1,650 freestyle with a time of 16:59.00, while Ross Ritter took fifth for SDSU in 18:24.56.
