DENVER - South Dakota State volleyball was swept by Denver Saturday afternoon at Hamilton Gymnasium. The loss drops the Jackrabbits to 10-12 on the season and 4-6 in the Summit League while the Pioneers improve to 13-9 overall and 7-4 in conference action.
Set scores in Denver went 27-29, 16-25, 25-27. This is the fourth consecutive loss by the Jackrabbits.
The Jackrabbits led 24-21 in the opening set on an
Elyse Winter kill before the Pioneers rattled off four straight to lead by one. The sides traded points until Denver got two kills from Hailey Green for the 29-27 win.
An 8-1 run in the second set pushed Denver out to a 9-2 advantage. The Jacks pulled back within two at 10-8 and trailed by four at 17-14 before the Pioneers ended the set outscoring SDSU 9-3.
In the final set, SDSU came back from a 24-19 deficit to lead 25-19 behind strong serving from
Crystal Burk. The fifth-year senior notched two aces in that stretch. With SDSU up 25-24, Green put down three straight kills to win the match.
Burk had nine kills to lead South Dakota State.
Elyse Winter added eight kills and
Ella Thompson rounded out the top hitters with six kills. Thompson's .333 attack rate was a team high.
Raegen Reilly gave out 26 assists, followed by
Carly Wedel with four helpers.
Jadyn Makovicka's 17 digs paced the defense. Van Egdom chipped in nine digs followed by Reilly and Burk with six apiece. Winter,
Anna Nerad and
Sydney Andrews took part in two blocks each.
Three Pioneers had double-digit kills. Memphis Glasgow had 14 kills while Brianna and Hailey Green added 12 each.
NOTES
- This is the first time this season Crystal Burk has had less than 10 kills.
- Crystal Burk's double-double streak of 11 matches was snapped.
- SDSU is 3-3 in three-set matches this year.
- The Jackrabbits were held to 34 total kills and a .108 attack percentage in the match, both season lows. Denver, the fourth best blocking team in the country, recorded eight blocks.
