Kansas City, Mo. - SDSU played spoiler for Kansas City's Senior Day festivities as the Jacks took care of business in the Swinney Center, 3-1.
It was a replay of the first meeting between the two sides, as SDSU put away 12 aces from the service line, mimicking the first meeting between the schools, where SDSU dropped in 13 aces, a First Bank & Trust Arena record.
For the Jacks, Sylvie Zgonc led the way with 18 kills, hitting .333 for the day and putting away three aces. Marisa Michaelis continued her extended run of good play, knocking down eight kills on 18 swings. Claire Logeais and Taylor Byl tied for the team lead in blocks with five apiece, with Logeais compiling two solo blocks in her total. Joslyn Richardson kept the ball off the floor well, gathering 14 digs to lead the side.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
Set 1: The Jacks got off to a hot start, rattling off an 8-1 run to put the Roos in danger early. Kansas City clawed back into the match, but the Jacks forced the media timeout with a nine-point lead, 15-6. The Jacks didn't allow the gap to close either, as they ripped off two 3-0 runs to take the set, 25-14.
Set 2: The Roos got more comfortable in the second set as they traded points back and forth with the Jackrabbits before putting together a 6-0 run and extending their lead to 16-10. The Jacks never fully recovered from the run as Kansas City continued to play smart volleyball and take the set, 25-17.
Set 3: After the set two break, the Jacks came out blazing, ripping away on a 9-2 run to start the half. They continued pushing the pace in the set as they forced the media timeout with a 15-10 lead. A 3-0 run followed by a 5-0 run put the Roo comeback to bed as the Jacks continued on to take the set, 25-12, only allowing two more points after the media timeout.
Set 4: The Jacks went back to work in the fourth set, hungry to finish out the match. SDSU grabbed an early 6-2 lead, but the Roos battled back into the set, cutting the deficit to three multiple times, til the Jacks pulled away and forced the media timeout at 15-10. The Roos continued to pester the Jacks, but a four-point run late in the set was the decider as SDSU took the set, 25-19, and the match, 3-1.
