MINNEAPOLIS — South Dakota State swimmers established numerous season-best times while splitting duals against St. Thomas and host Minnesota Friday at the Jean K. Freeman Aquatic Center.
Both Jackrabbit squads earned victories over Summit League rival St. Thomas, with the men posting a 183-115 victory and the women winning by a score of 186-112. Minnesota held the upper hand over SDSU, notching a 203-87 victory on the men's side and scoring a 199-89 win in the women's competition.
Men's Recap Spencer Fritze earned runner-up finishes in both diving events and Austin Smith recorded a pair of top-three performances in the pool to lead the Jackrabbits.
A senior from Park Rapids, Minnesota, Fritze tallied a score of 264.40 points in the 1-meter diving competition and scored 275.05 points on the 3-meter board to place second in both events. Zach Boyd was third for the Jackrabbits in the 1-meter event with a season-best score of 245.25.
Smith led a strong SDSU contingent in the 200-yard individual medley, clocking a runner-up time of 1 minute, 58.23 seconds as the Jackrabbits took three of the top four spots in the event. Bryan Wong placed third in a season-best time of 1:58.82, with Gavin Wheeler taking fourth in 2:00.02.
Smith added a third-place time of 51.09 seconds in the 100 butterfly, with Wong placing fourth in another season-best time of 52.14 seconds.
Wheeler turned in an individual second-place effort of his own in the 200 breaststroke, finishing with a time of 2:12.70.
Also recording top-three individual finishes were Eric Anderson in the 50 freestyle with a season-best time of 20.86 seconds and freshman Jack Ellison in the 500 freestyle, 4:50.08. Anderson later teamed with Sam Johnson, Jon Galles and Alex Kraft for a runner-up finish in the 400 freestyle relay, 3:07.97.
Women's Recap
South Dakota State recorded runner-up finishes in all five individual freestyle events and closed the night by posting two of the top three times in the 400 freestyle relay.
Elisabeth Timmer continued her strong opening month of the season with three second-place efforts. A senior from Savaneta, Aruba, Timmer clocked times of 23.61 seconds in the 50-yard freestyle, a season-best time of 51.37 seconds in the 100 freestyle and another season-best mark of 1 minute, 53.54 seconds in the 200 freestyle.
In the distance events, freshman Emily Shuttleworth paced the Jackrabbits with two top-three finishes. She trimmed more than six seconds off her previous season-best time in the 1,000 freestyle at 10:52.18 to place second, while also taking third in the 500 freestyle in 5:20.63. SDSU grabbed three of the top four spots in the 500 freestyle as Zoey Ahrens claimed second in 5:19.41, while Gabriella Gnewuch took fourth in 5:21.29.
Timmer teamed with Emma Bachelder, Mia Pendleton and Kelsey Kocon for a runner-up and season-best time of 3:33.91 in the 400 freestyle relay, while the Jackrabbit quartet of Gnewuch, Katie Pattee, Jenna Currier and Grace Witherspoon was third in 3:40.38.
Bachelder led the Jackrabbits in the breaststroke events by placing second in the 200-yard race, 2:27.48, and fourth in the 100-yard event, 1:07.56, notching season bests in both events.
Freshman Jenna Currier added a third-place effort in the 100 butterfly, clocking a season-best time of 59.56 seconds.

The Jackrabbits are scheduled to take part in the Coyote Extravaganza Nov. 4-5 in Sioux Falls. Competition is set to begin at 6 p.m. next Friday at Midco Aquatic Center.
