BROOKINGS, S.D. – South Dakota State travels to Savannah, Ga., to play consecutive games on back-to-back days as part of the Hostillo Community Classic. The Jackrabbits face Valparaiso at 12:30 p.m. CST on Friday in Enmarket Arena, then take on James Madison at 11 a.m. CST Saturday.
Â
The Jacks are slated to play in their 11th multi-team regular season event in the previous 10 seasons. During that span, SDSU has completed a 20-11 record in event appearances. The Jackrabbits went undefeated in multi-team tournaments in 2012-13, 2014-15 and 2015-16.Â
Â
SDSU has lost its last two contests which is a first for the program since the end to its 2019-20 season. The Jackrabbits are coming off defeats to No. 9/10 Arkansas (71-56) and Stephen F. Austin (93-82).Â
Â
The loss in Frost Arena to the Lumberjacks on Nov. 19 ended a 17-game win streak for the Jackrabbits on their home floor. They still hold a nation-leading .948 win percentage at home since 2015-16.
Â
Sophomore guard
Zeke Mayo has picked up his offensive production over the last two games for SDSU. He jumped into the team lead in scoring at 12.2 points per game behind his career-high 24 points against SFA. Along with his SDSU-high nine versus the Razorbacks, Mayo went 12-for-21 (.571) during the two-game span. He still paces SDSU averaging 7.2 rebounds per contest.
Â
Mayo was joined as a scoring leader versus the Lumberjacks by
Charlie Easley who scored a career-high 22 points. It was the first double-digit contest scoring for him since the opener at Akron.
Â
Valparaiso stands at 2-2 overall before its matchup at Samford on Wednesday. The Beacons are led by Ben Krikke who averages nearly 24 points per game and is a member of Valpo's 1,000-point club. Head coach Matt Lottich is 99-98 in his seventh year.
Â
James Madison is 4-1 overall ahead of its trip to Savannah. The Dukes fell 80-64 to No. 1 North Carolina their last time out. Takal Molson and Vado Morse each average 14.6 points to lead JMU.
