BROOKINGS, S.D. – The South Dakota State women's soccer program graduates six seniors from its 2022 roster and will welcome that same number of student-athletes as part of the Jackrabbits' 2023 recruiting class. Signing National Letters of Intent for the Jackrabbits and joining SDSU next fall are Katelyn Beulke (Hugo, Minn.), Ava Grate (Rosemount, Minn.), Jillian Lane (Lincoln, Neb.), Taryn Hettich (Aberdeen, S.D.), Ellie Gusman (Aiea, Hawaii) and Emma Knack (Isanti, Minn.).
"We are really excited to welcome KB, Ellie, Jillian, Taryn, Ava and Emma into our Jackrabbit soccer family," SDSU head coach
Brock Thompson said. "Each one of them possess unique skills as a player that will help us take Jackrabbit soccer to new heights, but more importantly, they all embody character traits that will make them great teammates and ambassadors for SDSU."
Katelyn Beulke | 5-5 | Forward | Hugo, Minn. | Mahtomedi High School | Salvo SC
Katelyn Beulke joins the Jackrabbits after serving as an offensive standout for Mahtomedi High School. Beulke was named the 2022 Class AA Minnesota Miss Soccer award winner as she scored nearly 30 goals for the Zephyrs. The forward helped Mahtomedi claim multiple state championships and ended her prep career helping the team claim runner-up in 2022. The season featured her earning First Team All-State and all-conference honors, as well as Star Tribune All-Metro First Team accolades.
Beulke picked up multiple seasons of First Team All-State and all-conference recognition during her time at Mahtomedi. She plans to major in human biology at SDSU.

"In my 30-plus years of coaching, Katelyn Beulke might be the most complete player I have ever coached. She combines exceptional athleticism with her strength and speed. She has superb skills including her ability to score off the dribble, with the header and from distance. Katelyn is a student of the game who continues to add new depth to her game. She is able to settle a ball drilled at her with two players hanging on her. She is incredibly unselfish and celebrates assists and goals with her teammates with equal exuberance."
Taryn Hettich | 5-5 | Midfielder | Aberdeen, S.D. | Aberdeen Central High School | Hub City SC
Taryn Hettich served a two-year captain for the Aberdeen Central High School girls soccer team. Hettich helped the Golden Eagles claim multiple conference championships, as well as two state runner-up finishes including this fall. Hettich recorded double digits in both goals and assists during her prep career.
Hettich was a First Team All-State selection twice and a Second Team honoree as a sophomore. She earned all-conference accolades three straight seasons. Hettich is a member of National Honor Society and plans to major in exercise science at SDSU.
Coach Kendra Hanley on Taryn Hettich (Aberdeen Central)
"Taryn is your ideal athlete as a coach. She does everything for the greater of the team. Taryn is a top-leader who comes to practice ready to learn and improve, every day. When it was time to roll, on the dot, she would lead her team to start, no prompts needed. She made coaching easy. You can instruct her or the team to do something, and she would take care of the rest in order to accomplish the task given. She leads with grace, positive, enthusiasm and intensity. These qualities will carry her far! She is a kid who puts the time in outside of the season, as well as inside, to be the best she can be."
Emma Knack | 5-10 | Goalkeeper | Insanti, Minn. | St. Francis High School | Wave SC
Emma Knack has been a six-year member of the St. Francis High School girls varsity soccer team. She has started in goal for a majority of her prep career, totaling a career-high 132 saves as a freshman. Her goals-against average has been under 1.00 each year at St. Francis, which included a standout junior season that saw her record a 0.24 goals-against average and .951 save percentage.
Knack claimed all-conference honors four straight years. A three-time All-State honorable mention, Knack was named a Second Team All-State choice in 2022. She was a member of multiple conference championship teams and helped her squad pick up a section 6AA title in 2021, with the Saints advancing to the state tournament. An all-conference academic team member a variety of years, Knack plans to major in nutrition and dietetics at SDSU.

"Emma is a high-character individual with great soccer skills and athletic ability. She has such a high ceiling and is just scratching the surface of her full potential. She is an extremely coachable young lady who will be a great student-athlete. She will represent SDSU well on the field, in the community and in the classroom. Coach Thompson and his staff are getting a good one!"
Ava Grate | 5-6 | Defender | Rosemount, Minn. | Rosemount High School | Minnesota Thunder Academy
Ava Grate helped lead her Rosemount High School team to a Class 3A state championship this fall. Grate has played in the midfield and defense for the Irish, earning her team's Rookie of the Year and Miss Offense awards. She has been an All-State selection and all-conference honoree while claiming all-section tournament team accolades.
Grate has been successful in the classroom earning multiple Scholar Athlete awards at Rosemount while also being a member of the National Honor Society. Her father, Tim, played football at the University of Minnesota. Her sister, Madalyn, is currently a sophomore at North Dakota State. Grate plans to major in exercise science at SDSU.
Coach Gretchen Stramel on Ava Grate (Rosemount HS)
"Ava is a dynamic player with great poise on the ball. Her touch, foot skills, explosive speed and quick shot release make her a dangerous player no matter where she is on the field. Ava is a dedicated teammate that makes everyone around her better."
Jillian Lane | Midfielder | 5-7 | Lincoln, Neb. | Lincoln Southwest High School | Sporting Nebraska
Jillian Lane joins the Jackrabbits with her senior campaign still to look forward to at Lincoln Southwest High School. Her junior season was filled with accolades as she was named First Team Class A All-State, First Team All-City, First Team All-Conference and Second Team Super State. Lane scored 20 points on five goals and 10 assists in 16 games in the spring of 2022.
A multiple year contributor for the Silver Hawks, Lane has claimed academic all-conference and scholar athlete awards in her time at Lincoln Southwest. She's been named to her school's Honor Roll with Highest Distinction list. Her sister, Gwen, is currently a junior on the Nebraska soccer team. Lane plans to study pre-dental at SDSU.
Coach Alex Mason on Jillian Lane (Sporting Nebraska SC)
"Jillian has played for me for 4-5 years and during that time she has played up on every age group. This year, being in the 18-19 group, she actually played for the first time with likewise players. She's so advance in the sense of being able to deal with the game regardless of the physicality. Her tactical awareness she has allows her to do well in the open game. She's played multiple positions, so she doesn't have to play just one role. She's good in the air and I think her strongest trait is her mobility from box to box. She can cover so much ground and she's never overwhelmed by the opposition."
Ellie Gusman | Forward/Midfielder | 5-3 | Aiea, Hawaii | Punahou School | Hawaii Rush East
Ellie Gusman has been a high performer for the Punahou girls soccer team. A member of the Buff n' Blue her entire prep tenure, Gusman has been an all-conference performer multiple times and has earned All-State First Team honors while still prepping for her senior season. As a junior a season ago, Gusman scored four goals and dished out 12 assists while contributing to a state runner-up squad.
Gusman has participated in several high-quality events including ODP and Id2 national and regional camps. She's earned ODP all-tournament honors and regional pool selections. Her sister, Emma, played soccer at Pacific University in Oregon, while her brother, Dominic, currently plays soccer at Whitworth in Spokane, Washington. Gusman plans to major in chemistry at SDSU.

"Ellie is a quick attacking player with strong finishing skills. She has been a pleasure to work with over the years and respects her teammates as well as the game itself. Ellie's family support structure is remarkable; her sibling parents and grandparents have both given her the guidance she needs to grow while also letting her carve her own path on her own. She will be a great addition to the Jackrabbits and I look forward to watching her continue her remarkable career."
