South Dakota State defensive coordinator Jimmy Rogers was named Thursday as one of five finalists for the 2022 FootballScoop FCS Coordinator of the Year.
Â
In his first season as SDSU's sole defensive coordinator, Rogers has directed a Jackrabbit unit that leads the Football Championship Subdivision in rushing defense by allowing only 83 yards per game and also ranks third in scoring defense at 15.4 points per game. The Jackrabbits have won 13 consecutive games in reaching the FCS title game for the second time in three seasons.
Â
In addition to serving as defensive coordinator, Rogers mentors the team's linebackers and holds the title of assistant head coach. He is the longest-tenured assistant on the Jackrabbit coaching staff as he is completing his 10th season at his alma mater.
Â
The four other finalists for the award are:
Kevin Decker, Fordham offensive coordinator;
Taylor Housewright, Montana State offensive coordinator;
Dennis Thurman, Jackson State defensive coordinator, and
Steve Verbit, Princeton defensive coordinator.
Â
Coaches must be nominated by a fellow coach to be eligible for the award, and each category's winner is selected by prior winners of that category. Winners will be announced in the coming days and will be honored at the American Football Coaches Association Convention in Charlotte, North Carolina, in January.
