EDINBURG, Texas - South Dakota State volleyball dropped a three-set match to UTRGV Saturday afternoon in the second round of the National Invitational Volleyball Championship (25-19, 25-20, 25-16). The Jackrabbits end the season 18-15 overall.
SDSU battled through all three sets with the Vaqueros but could not overcome a series of runs by the home team.
Masa Scheierman posted 12 kills for the Jackrabbits in the final game of her freshman season. She also had six digs and a service ace.
Crystal Burk was just behind with 11 kills to go with seen digs and a solo block.
Freshman
Alia Schlimgen got her first start at libero for the Jacks and tallied 13 digs and two ace serves.
Raegen Reilly gave out 26 assists and recorded four digs.
UTRGV outhit SDSU .327 to .148 in the contest and had a 45-35 advantage in kills. The Vaqueros also had the advantage in aces (7-3), blocks (11-4), assists (43-32) and digs (45-37).
UTRGV was led by 12 kills from Sarah Cruz and 10 kills from Perris Key. The Vaqueros advance to the NIVC quarterfinal round, which will be played early next week.
NOTES
- South Dakota State finished with a winning record for the second straight season. This is the first time in SDSU's Division I history the program has had consecutive winning seasons.
- UTRGV has the highest RPI of all 32 teams in the NIVC (57). The Jacks are rated 172.
