BROOKINGS, S.D. – South Dakota State is slated to host a New Year's Eve matchup on Saturday as St. Thomas visits Frost Arena with tipoff scheduled for 2 p.m. The contest will be the third between the two sides since the Tommies joined The Summit League.Â
Â
Last season, the Jackrabbits claimed a 92-77 win in St. Paul on Jan. 20 and a 79-60 victory over the Tommies in Brookings on Feb. 19. The meetings were the first between the Jacks and Tommies since 1973 as SDSU improved to 11-7 all-time in the series. The first contest saw SDSU trail by five at the halftime break, but rally behind a career-high 20 points by
Alex Arians and another 15 by
Zeke Mayo. Four Jackrabbits scored in double digits as SDSU controlled from the get-go in the second meeting.Â
Â
St. Thomas travels to Brookings after nearly completing a comeback versus South Dakota on Thursday, but eventually lost 92-84. Season leading scorer Andrew Rohde led the Tommies with 22 points, while reigning Performer of the Week Parker Bjorklund had 17 points and seven rebounds.
SDSU evened its Summit League record to 1-1 on Thursday as the Jackrabbits defeated Western Illinois, 71-64, in Frost Arena. The Jacks led for a majority of the game until a 15-2 run in the midst of the second half pushed the Leathernecks ahead. They were up 61-56 with 5:19 left, then
Zeke Mayo scored the game's next 13 points -- and SDSU's final 15 points of the night -- en route to the league win.Â
Â
Mayo topped his career-high point total with 33 on Thursday. He went 11 of 21 from the field, including a 4-for-9 mark from long range. He was joined in double digits by
Matthew Mors (12) and
Matt Dentlinger (10). Mors made his first-career start and played a collegiate-high 29 minutes.Â
Â
The Jackrabbits held the Leathernecks to their third lowest field goal percentage of the season in the contest (38.2%). SDSU's
Matt Mims played a career-high 39 minutes and held WIU leading scorer Trenton Massner to 6 of 19 shooting.Â
Â
Following the victory on Thursday, SDSU is 5-0 this season when allowing less than 70 points.
