CEDAR FALLS, Iowa - The South Dakota State softball team used a sixth-inning rally to down Nebraska 6-2 Sunday morning in the final game of the UNI-Dome Tournament. The Jackrabbits improve to 3-2 on the young season and Head Coach
Krista Wood picked up the 200th win of her South Dakota State career.
Down 2-1 in the top of the sixth with runners on first and third,
Rozelyn Carrillo hit an RBI single to score
Mia Jarecki, tying the game.
Brooke Dumont doubled on the next at bat to plate
Cheyanne Masterson, giving the Jackrabbits the 3-2 lead with just one out on the board, two runners in scoring position and
Cylie Halvorson at the plate. Halvorson delivered, blasting a three-RBI homer to left field and pushing the SDSU lead to 6-2.
Nebraska was poised to make a comeback of their own in the bottom of the sixth, loading the bases, but the Huskers' Brooke Andrews grounded into a double play, ending the inning unscathed for SDSU. The Jacks went down in order in the seventh frame but held off Nebraska again in the bottom half with another double play, sealing the win.
Carrillo and Halvorson notched two hits each for the Jacks and combined for five RBIs. Carrillo's first RBI came in the fourth inning when she singled to score
Lindsey Culver from second base.
Emma Hardin recorded the win in 4.1 innings of relief, allowing five hits but no runs and no walks while tallying one strikeout. Hardin entered the game in a tough spot, with the Huskers already up 2-0 and the bases loaded. The senior pitcher was unfazed, however, letting her defense go to work as the Jacks tallied the final out on an infield pop up to get out of the inning.
Olivia Ferrell takes the loss for Nebraska. She allowed Dumont's double in the sixth, the only batter she faced. Ferrell and Abbie Squier notched two hits each for Nebraska. Squier was responsible for both RBIs.
