SAN DIEGO - South Dakota State softball went 1-1 on the first day of the Torero Classic Friday, picking up a 2-1 extra-innings win over Oregon State and falling to Iowa 1-2. The Jacks move to 4-3 on the season.
Cylie Halvorson and
Jocelyn Carrillo tallied two hits on the day, one in each game. Halvorson and
Cheyanne Masterson recorded one RBI apiece.
Tori Kniesche was the winning pitcher in the win over Oregon State, giving up four hits and one earned runs with 10 strikeouts and three walks.
Game 1 vs. Oregon State - W, 2-1
The Jackrabbits used an error in the second inning to score its first run of the day. With
Caelyn Christiancy pinch running on third, Masterson put the ball in play and reach first base on a throwing error, allowing the runner to score.
The Beavers evened the score in the fourth. With two outs on the board, an OSU single by Grace Messmer plated Mariah Mazon from second base to make it a 1-1 game.
Halvorson was the eighth-inning hero for SDSU. With two runners on, Halvorson singled to plate
Rozelyn Carrillo's winning run. The Jackrabbit defense put the Beavers down in order in the bottom of the eighth to secure the win.
Six players recorded a hit in the game. Kniesche earned the win with her 10 strikeouts while Mariah Mazon struck out 13 batters with no walks and is tagged with the loss.
Game 2 vs. Iowa - L, 1-2
SDSU's second game of the day was scoreless until the final two innings.
Iowa got on the board first, bunting into a fielder's choice and scoring the runner from third base. The Hawkeyes doubled their lead in the seventh after being awarded a bases-loaded walk.
Down two runs, the Jackrabbits looked to rally in the bottom of the seventh.
Tori Tollefson led off the inning with a walk. She was joined on the bases by
Mia Jarecki, who singled to put runners on first and second. Cheyenne Masterson also knocked a single, scoring Tollefson, but SDSU could not find the tying run and fell to the Hawkeyes.
The Jacks also had six hits in game two with one from six different players.
Grace Glanzer is tagged with the loss, throwing all seven innings and giving up eight hits and four walks while striking out seven.
UP NEXT
The Jackrabbits will return to the field Saturday for two more games. SDSU will play DePaul at 1:30 p.m. CT and San Diego at 6:30 p.m. CT.
