SAN DIEGO, Calif. - South Dakota State Softball moved to 5-4 on the season and 2-2 at the Torero Classic Saturday with a split on day two of the tournament. The Jacks took the first game of the day, a 5-3 victory over DePaul, before falling in extra innings to San Diego, 5-6, in game two.
Three Jackrabbits had two hits on the day -
Peyton Daugherty,
Emma Osmundson and
Cheyanne Masterson.
Tori Kniesche earned the win in game one and
Emma Hardin picked up a save.
Game 1 vs. DePaul - W, 5-3
The Jacks put up three runs in the third inning against DePaul and tacked on one more each in the fourth and fifth for the win over the Blue Demons.
With Osmundson and
Jocelyn Carrillo on base,
Peyton Daugherty knocked a triple to right field to score the runners and give the Jacks a 2-0 lead. Rozelyn Carillo followed with a sacrifice fly to score Daugherty.
The Jacks added a run in the fourth on an RBI single from Osmundson, scoring
Allison Yoder.
Kniesche struck out all three batters in the top of the fifth frame, making way for SDSU's final run in the bottom half - an RBI by
Lindsey Culver to score Daugherty.
DePaul cracked the scoreboard in the bottom of the sixth and added two in the seventh but could not complete the comeback.
Kniesche struck out seven batters and gave up just one hit and two walks in her five innings of work. Hardin pitched two innings in relief, giving up four hits and one walk on her way to the save.
Daugherty and Osmundson tallied two hits each with Daugherty tallying two RBIs.
Erin Hocker takes the loss for the Blue Demons.
Game 2 vs. San Diego - L, 5-6
The Jacks led game two 4-1 until the seventh inning, when San Diego made a comeback push to tie the game at 4-4 and force extra innings. The Jacks put up one more run in the top of the eighth before the Toreros walked off with two runs for the 6-5 victory.
Culver scored the first Jackrabbit run of the game in the first inning, taking advantage of a San Diego fielding error. Yoder tripled in the second inning to score Masterson for the 2-0 lead.
The Jacks added two more runs in the fourth inning on a two-RBI single by
Jocelyn Carrillo to send home Masterson and Osmundson.
San Diego put up its first run in the fourth inning to trail 4-1 heading into the seventh. After tying the game in the seventh, the tournament host pulled off the comeback effort in the eighth.
Masterson tallied two hits in the game while
Jocelyn Carrillo had two RBIs.
Grace Glanzer is tagged with the loss. The sophomore tossed 7.2 innings, giving up nine hits and six runs with two walks. Madison Earnshaw earned the win.
