South Dakota State men's basketball head coach
Eric Henderson and student-athletes
Baylor Scheierman and
Douglas Wilson were honored by the National Association of Basketball Coaches Tuesday.
Henderson was named District 12 Coach of the Year, while Scheierman earned first-team all-District 12 recognition and Wilson received second-team honors.
Summit League regular season champions in each of his three seasons as head coach, Henderson led the Jackrabbits to their sixth Summit League Tournament title in 11 years last week in Sioux Falls. SDSU's 30 wins is a school and conference record and it's tied for the second most in the nation. The Jackrabbits also sport a 21-game win streak, the longest active string of victories in Division I men's basketball.
Scheierman, a sophomore from Aurora, Neb., averaged 16.2 points, 7.8 rebounds and 4.5 assists per game. He was the only player in Division I this season to lead his conference in both rebounds and assists en route to claiming the Summit League's Player of the Year award.
A senior from Des Moines, Iowa, Wilson was the Summit League Tournament most valuable player after scoring 20 points in each of SDSU's three tournament wins. He posted averages of 16.5 points and 5.5 rebounds per game, while shooting 57.4 percent from the field. He draws 7.7 fouls per 40 minutes, the second most in Division I, and his 204 free-throw attempts rank 13th nationally.
South Dakota State is in the No. 13 seed in the Midwest Region of the NCAA Tournament. The Jackrabbits open up play against fourth-seeded Providence on Thursday at 11:40 a.m. in Buffalo, N.Y.
