DETROIT, Mich. — Clay Carlson's quest to earn All-America honors for the second year in a row came up one win short Friday night at the NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships at Little Caesars Arena.
Â
A junior 141-pounder who placed eighth in the weight class last season, Carlson advanced to the so-called "Blood Round" with a pair of overtime victories earlier in the day. The native of Willmar, Minnesota, avenged a pair of losses earlier in the season to Missouri's Allan Hart by pulling out a 7-5 victory in his first match of the day, followed by a 2-1 sudden victory against North Carolina State's Ryan Jack to close out the morning session.
Â
Carlson trailed Hart, 3-1, entering the third period, but managed to tie the match at 5-all with a takedown late in regulation. Carlson then came up with the decisive takedown midway through the extra session for the win.
Â
Against Jack, the two wrestlers traded escapes in the second and third periods for the only scoring during regulation. Carlson was awarded the tie-breaking point in overtime on a stalling call after a takedown attempt by the Jackrabbit wrestler.
Â
In the evening session, Carlson was matched up against a fellow returning All-American in third-seeded Sebastian Rivera of Rutgers. Rivera scored on a takedown in the first period and built up a healthy advantage in riding time before adding to his lead with an escape to open the second stanza.
Â
Carlson countered with his lone takedown of the match late in the second period to draw to within 3-2, but Rivera recorded another takedown off a neutral start in the final period and capped his 6-2 decision with a point for riding time.
Â
With a 3-2 record in the tournament, Carlson ended his season with a 33-6 overall record.
Â
Three other Jackrabbits were eliminated from contention with losses in Friday's morning session to finish the tournament with 1-2 marks.
Â
At 174 pounds, Cade DeVos was knocked out by Missouri's Peyton Mocco, 6-2. It was DeVos' second loss of the postseason to Mocco, with the first coming two weeks ago in the semifinals of the Big 12 Wrestling Championship. A sophomore from Altoona, Iowa, DeVos wrapped up the season with a 30-9 record.
Tanner Sloan went to overtime in his match against 11th-seeded Thomas Penola of Purdue. Sloan led 4-0 after one period with a takedown and two-point near-fall, but Penola gained the momentum in the second period to rally to tie the match at 8-all at the end of regulation. In the overtime period, Penola came up with another takedown that was confirmed by video review to pull out a 10-8 victory.
Â
A three-time NCAA qualifier from Alburnett, Iowa, Sloan ended his junior season with a 21-7 record.
Â
Jackrabbit heavyweight A.J. Nevills bowed out of the tournament with a 13-1 setback at the hands of fifth-seeded and Big 12 champion Wyatt Hendrickson. Nevills, a junior from Clovis, California, closed his first season at South Dakota State with a 28-13 mark.
