BOSTON - South Dakota State's
Douglas Wilson and
Baylor Scheierman are finalists for the Lou Henson National Player of the Year Award, organization officials announced Monday.
The award is presented annually to the top mid-major player in Division I men's college basketball. It is named in honor of Henson, who served as the head coach of Illinois and New Mexico State. In fact, he holds the school record for wins in each program.
Wilson finished his career 13th in SDSU history with 1,415 points. The Des Moines, Iowa, native was a three-time all-Summit League selection and earned Summit League Championship Most Valuable Player honors after leading the Jackrabbits to their sixth tournament title in 11 seasons. He averaged 16.4 points and 5.5 rebounds, shooting 56.9 percent over this final season as a Jackrabbit.
Scheierman, who hails from Aurora, Neb., was the Summit League Player of the Year. The only individual to lead his conference in both rebounds and assists, he finished the season with averages of 16.2 points, 7.8 rebounds and 4.5 assists.
South Dakota State won a school and conference record 30 games, including 21 in a row, compiling a 30-5 record under third-year head coach
Eric Henderson. The team advanced to its sixth NCAA Tournament in 11 years while shooting 44.5 percent from long range, the best 3-point percentage in Division I men's basketball this season.
