TULSA, Okla. — Four South Dakota State wrestlers advanced to tonight's semifinals at the Big 12 Wrestling Championship during the opening session of the tournament Saturday at BOK Center.
After going 3-9 in the preliminary round, all four Jackrabbits in the quarterfinals won their matches, starting with second-seeded Clay Carlson at 141 pounds. The lone SDSU wrestler to receive an opening-round bye, Carlson scored a 6-2 decision over Darren Green of Wyoming to improve to 28-3 on the season and earn a spot in the semifinals against Andrew Alirez of Northern Colorado.
Sophomore Cade DeVos tallied a pair of victories by decision to advance to the 174-pound semifinals. The Altoona, Iowa, native downed Air Force's Sam Wolf, 5-2, in the opening round, followed by a 3-0 shutout of Iowa State's Joel Devine in the quarterfinals.
DeVos is slated to meet sixth-seeded Peyton Mocco of Missouri in semifinal action.
Two-time NCAA qualifier Tanner Sloan locked up another trip to nationals with a pair of victories. Sloan pinned Kayne Hutchison of Air Force in the first period of their opening-round match, then posted a 5-1 decision over Alan Clothier of Northern Colorado.
Seeded second at 197 pounds, Sloan will face sixth-seeded Owen Pentz of North Dakota State in the semifinals.
At heavyweight, A.J. Nevills earned a berth in the semifinals with a pair of one-point victories. Nevills opened with a 3-2 victory against Utah Valley's Chase Trussell, then outlasted West Virginia's Michael Wolfgram, 5-4, in the quarterfinals.
Nevills faces top-seeded Wyatt Hendrickson of Air Force in the semifinals.
The Jackrabbits shook off a tough start in which three of their seeded wrestlers fell victim to upsets. Third-seeded Gabriel Tagg lost to former Jackrabbit Connor Brown of Missouri, 7-4, at 133 pounds, while sixth-seeded Tanner Cook dropped a 9-4 decision to Danny Snediker of Utah Valley in the 165-pound weight class. At 184 pounds, fifth-seeded Cade King lost a 5-2 decision to West Virginia's Anthony Carman.
That SDSU trio, along with Tanner Jordan (125 pounds), Daniel Kimball (149 pounds) and Kenny O'Neil (157 pounds) will look to stay alive in the wrestlebacks tonight. The evening session begins at 5 p.m.
