GREELEY, Colo. — Cody Carlson pitched six shutout innings and Drew Beazley broke the deadlock with a three-run home run in the top of the sixth to lift South Dakota State to a 5-2 victory over Northern Colorado in Summit League baseball action Saturday afternoon at Jackson Field.
Â
In clinching a series victory in the three-game set, the Jackrabbits improved to 13-16 overall and 8-4 in league play with their seventh win in eight games. UNC dropped to 7-26 overall and 4-8 in The Summit League.
Â
Beazley's third home run of the season came with one out in the sixth inning. Derek Hackman reached on an error with one out and Henry George singled to center before Beazley connected on a shot over the left-field fence for his third home run of the season. The Jackrabbits reloaded the bases later in the inning and tacked on another run when Luke Ira was hit by a pitch, forcing in Jamie Berg.
Â
The Jackrabbit lead grew to 5-0 in the top of the seventh as Hackman led off with a double and scored on a hit to right by George.
Â
Carlson, meanwhile, negotiated around at least one hit in every inning to keep Northern Colorado off the board in his six innings on the mound. The senior left-hander struck out three and walked only one in picking up his team-leading fifth win of the season.
Â
UNC broke through against the Jackrabbit bullpen in the seventh inning with a pair of runs. The first run scored on a wild pitch and Shaydon Kubo added an RBI single before SDSU closer Bret Barnett struck out three consecutive Bears to end the frame.
Â
Barnett would strike out three more batters over the next two scoreless innings to finish off his sixth save of the season with six strikeouts.
Â
Hits were even at 13 as Beazley and George each went 3-for-5 to lead the Jackrabbit offense. UNC received three hits from Cameron Cromer.
