LAWRENCE, KANSAS – The South Dakota State men's and women's track teams continued the streak of outstanding performances over the weekend while wrapping up contests in Iowa and Kansas.
At the Rock Chalk Classic in Kansas, two jumpers led the way for SDSU with first place finishes.
Jaiden Boomsma won the long jump with a leap of 18-11.75, just short of her PR.
Annie Wendt (17-07.50) finished eighth and
Shae Campbell (17-02.00) took 12
th.
Tre Manning also claimed top prize in the men's long jump with his career-best leap of 23-11.00 for first, solidifying his spot in the SDSU record books in ninth place. In the same event,
Daniel Clarke took 14
th with a jump of 22-01.50.
In other men's events,
Tyler Goehring took fourth in the triple jump with a distance of 44-08.75 for a PR.
Trent Francom finished fourth in the pole vault with a clearance of 16-0950 as
Conner Powers cleared 6-04.75 for a sixth place finish in the high jump.
Tristen Hanna took fifth in the javelin with a throw of 165-09.00 while
Matthew Katz followed closely behind and grabbed seventh with a personal-best distance of 156-09.00.
Austin Eppard finished eighth in the discus throw with a distance of 158-06.00 and
Bryce Ludwig (134-09.00) took 16
th.
Four throwers placed in the top 15 of the hammer throw, led by a personal-best throw of 188-05.00 from
Hunter Wallster. His mark is now ninth all-time.
Also in the event,
Bryce Ludwig (177-11.00, PR) took 10
th,
Dawson Schroeder (175.03.00) was 11
th and
Dominick Etherington (174-00.00, PR) finished 12
th.
Schroeder then took runner-up in the shot put with a throw of 55-04.75 as Etherington finished third with 54-10.75.
Evan Henderson grabbed a PR in the 100-meter dash with a 10.98 for 13
th place while
Jake Werner finished 14
th in 11.01 seconds.
Pierre Lear finished fourth (14.62 seconds) in the 110-meter hurdles and
Josh Donahoe (15.38 seconds) took 11
th.
Werner grabbed a 12
th place finish in the 200-meter dash in 22.02 seconds as Henderson placed 22
nd in 22.52 seconds.
Thailan Hallman ran a 49.95 for seventh place in the 400-meter dash as
Max Ceplecha took 14
th in 51.39 seconds for a PR.
Emmanual Phoulom-Smith scored a sixth place finish in the 400-meter hurdles with a 55.00, followed closely behind by Lear in ninth place with a personal-best 56.00.
Tegan Bock (56.05, PR) took 10
th and Donahoe (57.58) was 11
th.
4x100-meter relay squad of Phoulom-Smith, Henderson, Clarke and
Matthew Stahl placed third overall in 41.38 seconds, which is now the seventh best mark on record.
As for the rest of the women's competition results,
Nora Peterson finished 11
th in the javelin with a throw of 121-10.00.
Wendy Van Nes took eighth in the pole vault with a height of 12-06.00 for a PR and the third best mark in school history.
Wendt also competed in the triple jump, leaping her way into 14
th place with a distance of 35-04.00 while
Emma Smith took 15
th with a 34-10.75.
All five throwers competing in the discus throw finished in the top 15, led by
Faith Leiseth 154-05.00 performance for fifth place. Mildred Young (131-05.00) took seventh,
Kennedy Morris (129-07.00) was eighth,
True Thorne (129-00.00) finished ninth and
Meghan Hettinga (122-01.00) grabbed 12
th.
Naomi Wynn took sixth in the hammer throw with a distance of 167-03.00 as Young earned 10
th with a throw of 149-10.00.
Leiseth then took third in the shot put with a throw of 47-07.75 while Hettinga took eighth with a 42-02.00. Young (40-04.00) was ninth, Wynn (38-09.75) finished 12
th and Thorne (36-05.50) grabbed 14
th.
Collette Wolfe scored an eighth place finish in the 100-meter dash, crossing the finish line in 12.13 seconds. Boomsma took 11
th in 12.31 seconds and
Ashtyn Bertram was 17
th in 12.46 seconds.
Bertram also grabbed a 15
th place finish in the 200-meter dash in 26.00 seconds.
Savannah Risseeuw picked up a sixth place finish in 14.63 seconds during the 100-meter hurdles while Wolfe (15.36) took 14
th and
Brielle Dixon (15.47) was 17
th.
Elizabeth Gillingham clocked a 1:00.21 for 14
th in the 400-meter dash, followed closely behind by
Emily Rystrom (1:01.77) in 18
th.
Risseeuw again earned a top-10 finish, this time placing eighth in the 400-meter hurdles in 1:06.04.
Laura Bogue was close behind, taking 10
th in 1:06.41 for a PR.
SDSU's 4x100-meter relay team of Dixon, Wolfe, Bertram and Boomsma took fifth overall in 47.41 seconds.
Back on the blue oval at the Drake Relays in Des Moines, the final few events of the three-day competition saw SDSU runner in different relay races.
The women's distance relay team of
Jessica Christoffer,
Cerington Jones,
Oksana Johnson and
Cailee Peterson clocked a 11:48.20 for 11
th place, now the sixth best time in school history.
Johnson and Jones then joined
Lauren Van Dyke and
Tori Glazier for the 4x400-meter relay and claimed ninth in 3:51.25.
Tom Breuckman,
Reid Pierzinski,
Riley Bauer and
Daniel Burkhalter teamed up for the men's distance relay and placed fourth overall in 9:49.38.
UP NEXT: The SDSU track teams will journey south to Vermillion on May 6 for the USD Twilight in the final competition week before league championships.
