TITLE IX CELEBRATION BEGINS FRIDAY

South Dakota State University Athletics will kick off a celebration of the 50th anniversary of Title IX legislation in conjunction with the Jackrabbit softball team's Alumni Weekend.
Prior to the start of Friday's noon doubleheader against North Dakota, Jackrabbit softball alumni will be recognized. Other recognition and educational events are planned over the next year at the institutional, conference and NCAA national levels.
The celebration commemorates the golden anniversary of the landmark federal law signed in 1972 that prohibits gender discrimination in educational programs and activities receiving federal financial assistance.
"South Dakota State was an early leader in women's intercollegiate athletics in the region — even before the passage of Title IX," said Kathy Heylens, senior associate athletic director and senior woman administrator. "As we reach this milestone, it is important to reflect not only on our successes, but also to take a look at how we can continue to enhance opportunity and improve our student-athlete experience."
Title IX is part of the Education Amendments of 1972 and was signed into law June 23 of that year. It states, "No person in the United States shall, on the basis of sex, be excluded from participation in, be denied the benefits of, or be subjected to discrimination under any education program or activity receiving Federal financial assistance."
