BROOKINGS, S.D. –Â
Katherine Jones scored a goal in the seventh minute and South Dakota State held on to that tally over the remaining 83 minutes to complete a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Air Force on Thursday, Sept. 15, at Fishback Soccer Park.Â
Â
Jones got SDSU on the scoreboard on the Jackrabbits' opening shot attempt of the game. She knifed through the Falcons' defense into the box and crossed up the goalkeeper with her right footed kick to find the back of the net.Â
Â
The two sides played a fairly even half following the SDSU goal. The Falcons outshot the Jacks 5-4 while SDSU had the game's only two first-half corner kick opportunities. In goal,
Jocelyn Tanner registered three saves.Â
Â
A downpour broke out minutes into the second half which featured a 45-minute span of Air Force chasing an equalizing goal.Â
Â
The Falcons recorded a 12-4 edge in shots and had several chances. However, the SDSU back line held up with defenders
Hayley Lindaman and
Rachel Preston blocking multiple Air Force shots.
Hailee Fischer, who took over keeper duties in the second half for SDSU, snagged a single-game career high of six saves.Â
Â
Air Force's final shot of the match was thwarted in the 88th minute as South Dakota State hung on for its first victory in the last thee matches.Â
Â
"I thought there was a lot of adversity in the game," SDSU head coach
Brock Thompson said. "Obviously from the weather, to some of the things that happened on the pitch, as well as our opponent. Air Force gave us a challenge out wide that really tested us. I'm proud of our team.Â
Â
"I thought we did just enough. But the great thing about this game is we can learn from it and get better before Sunday."
Â
Notes
The Jackrabbits remain undefeated with the win and now have an overall record of 5-0-3. Air Force fell to 2-3-1. SDSU improved on its unbeaten streak during regular season matches at Fishback Soccer Park to 36. The goal for Jones was her first of the season and served as her first points on the year as well. Tanner's three saves matched her season high. Â
