BROOKINGS, S.D. – The Jackrabbits are set to play their first game in Frost Arena in 2023 when SDSU hosts Omaha at 7 p.m. on Thursday.Â
Â
After opening the New Year with a close loss at North Dakota State on Jan. 5 and narrow win at North Dakota on Jan. 7, South Dakota State closed out a three-game road stretch this past Saturday with an 82-64 victory at South Dakota.Â
Â
SDSU's victory over the Yotes was its fifth straight in the series. That streak is now the longest between the two sides in each program's Division I era and the longest for SDSU since the early 2000s. The 18-point margin matched the largest by SDSU in a win in Vermillion since 1974.
Â
The Jackrabbits hold a 9-9 overall record on the season and have a .500 winning percentage for the first time since Nov. 16. SDSU sits among the top three in The Summit League standings at 4-2 behind Oral Roberts (6-0) and NDSU (5-2).Â
Â
SDSU has been carried by a consistent rotation of late.
Zeke Mayo continues to lead SDSU in scoring (14.9), rebounds (6.6), assists (3.1) and steals (1.0). Six Jacks have averaged over 18 minutes per game on the court while four join Mayo (37.1) with over 25 per contest in
Matt Mims (37.4),
Alex Arians (35.4) and
Matt Dentlinger (26.4). Â
Â
Dentlinger has stepped up his play in league play as he's averaged 14 points on 67.3% from the field through six games. He also has 6.7 rebounds per contest. Arians and
Matthew Mors each are averaging 8.5 points in conference action with both scoring double digits in three of the past five outings. Mims scored a season-high 13 points at South Dakota.
William Kyle III is averaging over 13 points and nine rebounds per 40 minutes in league contests.Â
Â
Omaha is 7-12 (3-4) this season under first-year coach Chris Crutchfield. The Mavericks are led in scoring by double-digit scorers Frankie Fidler (13.2), Marquel Sutton (11.6) and JJ White (10.5). Fidler also averages a team-high 5.9 rebounds per contest, while White dishes out a team-best 3.9 assists. The Jackrabbits have a five-game win streak over the Mavs and have won 10 of the last 12 meetings. SDSU is 63-34 all-time against Omaha.
Â
"They're a very talented offensive team," SDSU head coach
Eric Henderson said. "It starts with Frankie Fidler, he has an ability to score in bunches and he's very versatile. They've got athleticism and size on the low block and they can really chase and be effective scoring the basketball down there. They have the ability to put you in some tough spots defensively. We'll have our hands full, they can really score it. It should be a fun basketball game on Thursday."
