FARGO, N.D. - South Dakota State volleyball dropped a five-set road match to North Dakota State Thursday night. Down 2-0 in the match, SDSU stormed back to win the next two sets before falling in the tiebreak game.
Three Jackrabbits finished with double-digit kills, led by a 20-kill outing from
Sylvie Zgonc. The freshman hit .280 with six errors on 50 total swings.
Masa Scheierman added 15 kills and
Katie Van Egdom chipped in 10.
Van Egdom paced the squad with 18 digs for her eighth double-double of the season.
Raegen Reilly was just behind Van Egdom with 17 digs, followed by
Stella Winterfeld with 12.
In addition to her defensive contributions, Reilly dished a team-high 25 assists.
Rylee Martin finished with 17 helpers. Scheierman and
Sydni Schetnan recorded four blocks apiece. Schetnan also had five kills and five digs. Winterfeld and
Faith Saewert tallied two aces each.
The Bison had the advantage in kills (69-59), blocks (8-7)l and digs (72-67). The Jackrabbits recorded a 7-6 edge in aces.
Set one: A
Katie Van Egdom kill gave the Jackrabbits a 5-4 lead in the opening set. The Bison scored five of the next six to regain the lead, 9-6. Three NDSU errors and a Scheierman ace resulted in a 4-0 run and a 16-15 Jackrabbit lead. Another 4-0 stretch capped by a Reilly kill made it 23-22 for the Jackrabbits before NDSU won the set with three straight points.
Set two: An ace by Saewert made it 5-3 for the Jackrabbits. The teams traded points until, down 15-13, the Jackrabbits posted a 7-1 run to go up 20-16. Van Egdom had multiple kills and an ace during the run. NDSU came all the way back to tie the set at 22 and went on to win 25-23.
Set three: SDSU hit .438 in the third set with 14 kills and no errors. The Jacks trailed 14-11 but put up eight of the next 10 points to take a three-point lead, 19-16. NDSU tied the set at 19 and 20 before committing three straight errors, allowing the Jacks to go back up. Another 3-0 stretch tied the set at 24 before a Van Egdom kill and Bison error forced the fourth set.
Set four: Leading 11-10, the Jackrabbits went on a 6-2 run to lead 17-11. Van Egom and Scheierman had one kill apiece during the run and NDSU committed four errors. NDSU rallied late to get back within three at 22-19 and within two at 23-21. Another Bison error and a kill from Zgonc pushed the match to the fifth set.
Set five: NDSUs opened the final set with a 5-2 lead. The Bison led 8-5 at the side change. Reilly notched an ace to pull back within one at 9-8 but the Bison tallied six of the final seven points.

- Sylvie Zgonc has recorded at least 20 kills in four matches this seasoN.
- South Dakota State is now 7-17 on the season and 5-7 in Summit League play.
