The 2024 schedule for the South Dakota State baseball team will focus mostly on regional competition as the Jackrabbits attempt to build off a strong finish from the previous year.
Â
The Jackrabbits, who compiled a 24-28 overall record and advanced to the Summit League championship game last spring, are scheduled to play their first 24 games on the road. To open the season, SDSU will play a pair of four-game series at New Mexico State (Feb. 16-19) and New Mexico (Feb. 22-24). Once a frequent early season destination for SDSU baseball teams, the Jackrabbits will be making their first trip to the Land of Enchantment since 1982.
Â
From there, the Jackrabbits will head east for two more four-game series at SIU-Edwardsville (March 1-3) and Dayton (March 8-10).
Â
With Western Illinois departing The Summit League, the conference schedule will revert back to a 30-game slate featuring a double round-robin format in which each squad plays the other five teams in home-and-home three-game series. SDSU begins Summit League play with a three-game set March 15-17 at defending champion and 2023 College World Series qualifier Oral Roberts. Sandwiched around the trip to ORU are road games against Kansas State (March 13) and Creighton (March 20).
Â
SDSU, which finished third in the Summit League regular season race in 2023 with a 13-11 mark, stays on the road for the next league weekend, March 22-24 at St. Thomas. The Jackrabbits then open the home season March 28-30 with a series against Northern Colorado in what will be their lone series at Erv Huether Field in the first half of the Summit slate.
Â
Other home league series are set for April 19-21 versus St. Thomas, April 26-28 against Oral Roberts, May 10-12 versus North Dakota State and May 16-18 against Omaha. In all, the Jackrabbits are scheduled to play a total of 17 home games, including mid-week nonconference matchups against Northwestern (Iowa) on April 9 and an April 24 date with Dakota Wesleyan.
Â
SDSU also has a pair of mid-week road games at Minnesota scheduled for April 2 and 17 in Minneapolis.
Â
The remainder of the Summit League slate consists of road series at North Dakota State (April 5-7), Omaha (April 12-14) and Northern Colorado (May 3-5). On the return trip home from UNC, the Jackrabbits have picked up games at Air Force (May 6) and Nebraska (May 8). The final road trip of the season takes the Jacks back to Kansas State for a May 14 contest.
Â
The top four teams in league play will advance to the four-team, double-elimination Summit League Baseball Championship May 22-25 at J.L. Johnson Stadium on the Oral Roberts University campus in Tulsa, Oklahoma.
