HUNTSVILLE, Texas – Junior pitcher
Shannon Lasey pitched five shutout inningsvto highlight a South Dakota State 2-0 victory over Northwestern State in a non-conference softball contest on Sunday, Feb. 12, at Sam Houston's Bearkat Softball Complex.
Lasey was a two-time all-conference performer for now South Dakota State head coach
Kristina McSweeney at Arkansas Tech, including earning her conference's Pitcher of the Year award in 2022, and the SDSU newcomer has got off to a strong start in 2023 in Yellow and Blue.
Following a four-inning showing that led to her first win as a Division I pitcher on Saturday, Lasey went another five on Sunday. Lasey gave up just three hits while walking one batter. She struck out four Demon hitters and didn't allow a runner to reach second base.
Tori Kniesche came in for the save and completed two innings of one-hit softball while striking out four hitters. The only Northwestern State batter to reach second base came on a double in the sixth inning.
Lasey hasn't given up a run in nine innings of work this season and is now 2-0 overall.
The Jackrabbit lineup collected a combined five hits from five players on the day in
Mia Jarecki,
Emma Osmundson,
Allison Yoder,
Lindsey Culver and
Jocelyn Carrillo. SDSU scored its first run of the game in the second inning. Yoder hit a triple with one out, then was plated on an RBI ground out by
Brooke Dumont. The Jacks added an insurance run in the sixth. Jarecki led off the inning with a double and was scored on the next at-bat on an RBI single by Osmundson.
South Dakota State improved to 4-1 this season with the victory. Northwestern State dropped to 1-2.
