BROOKINGS, S.D. – South Dakota State carries a six-game win streak into its next contest which is currently scheduled for a 7 p.m. start Thursday. The Jackrabbits are slated to host Kansas City in Frost Arena. The matchup is the second between the two following SDSU's tight 67-66 victory over the Roos in the Swinney Center on Jan. 30.Â
Â
The Jackrabbits held a seven-point halftime lead over the Roos but Kansas City took its first lead, 49-47, with just under 12 minutes left in the Jan. 30 contest. In a game that featured eight lead changes and four tie scores, Kansas City was the team with a 66-65 edge with 37 seconds remaining. SDSU put the ball in
Zeke Mayo's hands the next possession and he was fouled with 12 second left. He hit two free throws to put the Jacks up by one, then SDSU held off a barrage of opportunities for the Roos for the win.
Â
In the third game in a five-day span, SDSU shot 51.1% from the field. Mayo led the Jacks with 24 points.
William Kyle III followed with a career-high 20 points. Shemarri Allen was Kansas City's leading scorer with 23 and RayQuawndis MItchell recorded 19 on 6-for-17 shooting.Â
South Dakota State is in the midst of two active streaks. The Jacks have won 19 straight Summit League games in Frost Arena dating back to the 2020-21 season. The Jacks have also earned 14 straight victories in the month of February dating back to the 2020-21 season. That active stretch of wins in the month is the longest among all Division I men's basketball programs.
Â
The Jackrabbits led for nearly the entire contest their last time out at Omaha on Saturday after having to complete an 18-point comeback on Thursday at Denver. The wins helped SDSU lock up the No. 2 seed for The 2023 Summit League Men's Basketball Championship. The Jackrabbits will play in the 8:30 p.m. game on Saturday, March 4, against the winner of the No. 7/No. 10 Seed matchup the day prior.Â
Â
Kansas City visits Brookings sitting sixth in the conference standings at 7-9, while the Roos are 11-18 overall. Kansas City has lost three consecutive contests. Mitchell (18.6) and Allen (17.8) lead the Roos scoring in league play.
