MINNEAPOLIS — South Dakota State established four school records in the men's division on the first full day of competition Thursday at the 2023 Summit League Swimming and Diving Championships held at the Jean K. Freeman Aquatic Center.
Sophomore Austin Smith became the first Jackrabbit record-setter on the day as he clocked a time of 1 minute, 48.18 seconds in the 200-yard individual medley during the morning preliminaries. He came back in the evening session with a time of 1:48.47 seconds to place fifth in the event.
The previous record of 1:50.27 was established by Cayden Christianson in 2021.
Alex Kraft turned in a record-setting performance in the 500 freestyle during the evening session Thursday, posting a time of 4:31.35 to finish 11th in the event. Jack Ellison placed 15th for the Jackrabbits in 4:36.05.
Kraft's mark eclipsed the previous record of 4:32.58 set by Chris Angerhofer in 2017.
Two Jackrabbit records fell in the final event of the night. The quartet of Eric Anderson, Rafael Negri, Charles Sieglaff and Aiden Carstensen teamed for an SDSU-record time of 1:20.83 in the 200 freestyle relay, with Anderson's leadoff leg of 19.81 seconds shaving .02 seconds off his own record in the 50 freestyle and also hitting an NCAA B-cut.
The SDSU men have combined to set six school records so far during the Summit League Swimming and Diving Championships, including all three relays contested so far in the four-day event. The previous 200 freestyle relay record of 1:21.17 was set by Kraft, Sieglaff, Negri and Anderson last season.
Anderson and Negri both swam in the individual 50 freestyle finals earlier in the evening session. Anderson placed third in 19.96 seconds, while Negri finished eighth in 20.67 seconds. Sieglaff swam in the B final, placing 16th in 20.99 seconds.
The Jackrabbits also had two finalists in 1-meter diving, where Spencer Fritze placed sixth with a score of 264.50 points and Zach Boyd claimed eighth with 244.05 points.
SDSU moved up one spot in the team standings to fourth place with 162 points. Defending champion Denver leads the team race with 315 points, followed by Lindenwood with 289.5 and the University of South Dakota with 169.
