South Dakota State makes its debut on the diamond with plenty of returning talent and a variety of new faces as the Jackrabbits enter the 2023 season. The Jacks make appearances in both the Houston Invitational (Feb. 10) and the Bearkat Classic (Feb. 11-12) over a three-day span.Â

The Jacks face reigning Big Ten champion Nebraska to open the season at 12:30 p.m. Friday, then close the day against host Houston at 3 p.m. SDSU travels to Huntsville for a trio of contests in the Bearkat Classic beginning on Saturday. The Jackrabbits will face UTSA and host Sam Houston starting at 3 p.m., while SDSU takes on Northwestern State at 10 a.m. on Sunday.

The Jackrabbits return to play in 2023 after claiming consecutive Summit League conference titles and making back-to-back NCAA Tournament appearances.Â

SDSU returns seven position starters and two pitchers from a season ago. The returning core for the Jacks features six All-Summit League performers from the 2022 season. A team that finished in the Top 50 of the NCAA RPI Rankings, SDSU went 18-2 in Summit League play. The Jackrabbits followed up a regular season conference title by defeating Omaha in the championship of The Summit League Tournament. SDSU earned an elimination game victory in nine innings over Villanova in the Orlando Regional of the NCAA Tournament, but two losses to Michigan ended the Jackrabbits' season at 41-13 overall.

Sister duo
Rozelyn Carrillo and
Jocelyn Carrillo have been standouts for the Jackrabbits.
Rozelyn Carrillo was the 2022 Summit League MVP as she batted .389 and hit 11 home runs and 47 RBIs. She had a 24-game hit streak during the season which was a school record.
Jocelyn Carrillo, who was a Second Team All-League performer in 2022, was a First Teamer in 2021 as she hit .418. She was among the top five in the league in hits, RBIs, triples and home runs and ranked 25th in the nation in slugging.

The last two Summit League Pitchers of the Year have been Jacks in
Grace Glanzer (2022) and
Tori Kniesche (2021). Both players already rank among career leaders in program history in multiple categories. Glanzer is currently third at SDSU all-time in wins with 52 and eyes the program record of 58. Kniesche, who was ranked 58th by Extra Inning Softball and 67th by DI Softball on their Top 100 Players in the nation lists this preseason, sits atop the program career ERA list with a 1.48 mark.

Remaining returning all-league performers for the Jackrabbits include
Allison Yoder,
Cheyanne Masterson,
Emma Osmundson and
Lindsey Culver. Yoder, a two-time first team selection, ranks in the program's all-time top 15 in both on-base and fielding percentage. Masterson hit 13 home runs in 2022 for SDSU. Osmundson has top 15 career marks for the Jacks in on-base percentage (.401) and batting average (.322). Culver ranks among the top seven in the record book in career home runs (23) and slugging percentage (.567).

The 2023 season will be the first under head coach
Kristina McSweeney. She spent the previous 10 seasons guiding the Arkansas Tech program and went 359-186-1 (.658) during her time in Russellville.
