SIOUX FALLS, S.D. – Four South Dakota State men's basketball players were honored on Thursday as the 2022-23 Summit League Men's Basketball Awards were announced by the conference ahead of the league's tournament beginning play on Friday.Â
Â
Sophomore
Zeke Mayo headlined SDSU's recognition as he was named First Team All-Summit League. Senior
Matt Dentlinger was voted Second Team All-Summit League. Junior
Matt Mims was picked as an All-Defensive Team selection. Freshman
William Kyle III made The Summit League's All-Newcomer Team.Â
Â
Mayo was chosen as a Preseason First Team All-Summit League selection and proved the voters right during the 2022-23 season. The Lawrence, Kan., native led the Jackrabbits in scoring (18.3), rebounding (6.2), assists (3.4) and steals (1.0) over the course of 30 games. Mayo registered four double-doubles which featured two 13-rebound efforts.Â
Â
His scoring prowess was a focal point for the Jacks as he produced double-digit points in all but three contests overall. Mayo scored over 20 points in half of SDSU's league games, which included two 30-point efforts and a 41-point performance against North Dakota State on Feb. 4. His marks in 30 contests rank among the top 10 in several categories in program history for a single season. His 91.8% free throw percentage, which is fourth best in Division I men's basketball this year, would rank as the third highest mark ever at SDSU. His 35.6 minutes played per game ranks sixth all-time at SDSU, his 5.9 defensive rebounds per appearance currently rank eighth and his 81 3-pointers are the ninth most ever in a season by a Jackrabbit.Â
Â
Mayo was a three-time TicketSmarter Summit League Peak Performer of the Week during the regular season. He was an All-Newcomer Team pick by The Summit League in 2021-22.Â
Â
Dentlinger was honored with Second Team All-Summit League accolades for the second time in his career. He previously was recognized on the Second Team in 2019-20.Â
Â
The Arcadia, Iowa, native's senior campaign has been a memorable one. Dentlinger has started and played in all 30 games for the Jackrabbits averaging a career-high 12.5 points to go along with 5.3 rebounds per game. His play improved in Summit League action as his numbers increased to 14.9 points and 5.8 rebounds per contest. Dentlinger has scored in double digits in 15 of his last 17 games, including two 26-point performances along with three other 20-plus point showings.
Â
South Dakota State's games played record holder at 152 appearances is playing a career-high 29 minutes per outing. Dentlinger's 58.8% field goal percentage overall and 62.2% clip in Summit League play each were conference highs during the season. He currently stands high among multiple career categories in SDSU program history. Dentlinger is second in all-time field goal percentage (61.1%) and third in blocks (116) to go along with the games played record.
Â
Mims was moved into the Jackrabbit starting lineup at the start of conference play and his performance earned him All-Defensive Team honors from The Summit League. The conference on-court accolades are the first of Mims's college career.Â
Â
The Cedar Rapids, Iowa, native played in all 30 games but stood out in league action as he competed 36.4 minutes per contest across 18 Summit League matchups. That total was sixth most among individuals in the conference. Mims averaged 8.2 points and 2.8 rebounds per game in league action, but shined on the defensive end for South Dakota State. The SDSU guard drew the Jackrabbits toughest assignment against opponents in the backcourt throughout their schedule. Mims helped lead SDSU's defensive to give up the second lowest average in opponents points per game of 67.4 in 18 conference games as well as overall of 69.6 during the 2022-23 season.Â
Â
Mims joins
Douglas Wilson as SDSU's All-Defensive Team honorees when it comes to the recently presented award.Â
Â
Rounding out South Dakota State's honors was Kyle III. The SDSU forward was one of two freshmen picked to the All-Newcomer Team, joining St. Thomas' Andrew Rhode who claimed the Freshman of the Year award.
Â
Kyle III was a consistent performer for the Jackrabbits over the course of his first college campaign. The Bellevue, Neb., native was a double-digit scorer in 13 games, including eight times in league play. He appeared in all 30 contests for the Jackrabbits on the season and started in 23. Kyle III averaged 9.5 points and 5.0 rebounds per game.Â
Â
He currently has 38 blocks which is tied for 10th most by a Jackrabbit in a single season in program history. Kyle III recorded a career-high 20 points during the season in a victory at Kansas City on Jan. 30. His season high of 11 rebounds came as part of his first double-double of his college career on Feb. 18 at Omaha.Â
Â
The Jackrabbits look forward to The Summit League Tournament held in Sioux Falls at the Denny Sanford PREMIER Center. SDSU is the No. 2 seed and plays in the quarterfinals at 8:30 p.m. on Saturday, March 4, against the winner of the No. 7/10 seeded game between Kansas City and Omaha.
