STILLWATER, Okla. – The South Dakota State softball team split a pair of games on Saturday at Cowgirl Stadium as the Jackrabbits defeated Tarleton State, 10-2, then lost a 4-0 decision to host and nationally third-ranked Oklahoma State.Â
Â
Game 1 (vs. Tarleton State)
SDSU closed out its second victory of the weekend over Tarleton State by a 10-2 margin.Â
Â
The Jackrabbits took the opening lead of the contest when
Jocelyn Carrillo smacked a solo home run in the top of the third. SDSU had an opportunity to extend its advantage in the top of the fourth as back-to-back singles by
Allison Yoder and
Cheyanne Masterson, along with a Carrillo walk, loaded the bases. However a strikeout ended the frame to keep it 1-0.Â
Â
The Texans responded in the bottom half of the inning. SDSU starter
Tori Kniesche, who hadn't allowed a hit through three innings, gave up a two-run home run to Tarleton State's Austin Germain to make it 2-1.Â
Â
Their lead didn't last long.Â
Â
SDSU's
Emma Osmundson singled to begin the fifth and
Rozelyn Carrillo crushed a two-run home run and make it a 3-2 matchup.
Â
Kniesche completed a scoreless fifth before
Alexa Williams came on in relief for the Jackrabbits. The Texans were able to get runners to first and third with two outs, but a strikeout ended the threat.Â
Â
The Jacks added plenty of insurance to their lead in the seventh. Three consecutive walks with the bases loaded make it 6-2. Then Osmundson hit a two-run double, and
Rozelyn Carrillo followed with a two-run single to propel SDSU ahead 10-2.Â
Â
Kniesche picked up the win for the Jackrabbits as she went five innings. She allowed two runs on one hit to go along with three walks while striking out six. Williams earned a save by pitching two innings. She gave up three hits, but didn't give up a walk and struck out three.Â
Â
The South Dakota State lineup had four Jacks with multi-hit games in Osmundson, Williams and the Carrillo sisters. Osmundson and
Jocelyn Carrillo each scored two runs while
Rozelyn Carrillo drove in four.Â
Â
Game 2 (vs. Oklahoma State)
The No. 3 Cowgirls took control of the game early and didn't allow the Jackrabbits to provide a threat in a 4-0 victory.Â
Â
Oklahoma State plated three runs in the bottom of the second behind a two-run double and RBI groundout. The Cowgirls added another run with an RBI single in the bottom of the fourth.Â
Â
Cowgirl starter Kyra Aycock produced a strong effort against the Jackrabbits. She pitched a complete game six-hitter striking out eight hitters and giving up just one walk. Five Jacks earned hits off Aycock with
Jocelyn Carrillo having a team-high two, while
Brooke Dumont hit a double.Â
Â
SDSU starter
Shannon Lasey pitched tough against the third ranked team in the country despite picking up the loss. She gave up four runs in five innings of work. She struck out two batters and walked six.Â
