South Dakota State continues play at the 2023 Summit League Men's Basketball Championship on Monday at 8:30 p.m. The Jackrabbits await the winner of the No 3./No. 6 seed matchup between North Dakota State and South Dakota as they gear up for the semifinal round at the Denny Sanford PREMIER Center.Â
Â
The Jacks improved to 7-1 all-time as the No. 2 seed at The Summit League Tournament with their 63-55 victory over Omaha in the quarterfinals on Saturday. SDSU is also now 25-8 all-time in the conference tournament as the Jackrabbits head to a semifinal round they are 7-4 in as a member of The Summit League.Â
Â
SDSU began its 2023 tournament appearance in Sioux Falls by turning to a strong defensive mindset in the second half. After a first half that saw Omaha shoot over 50% from the floor as well as from 3-point range, the Jackrabbits clamped down on the Maverick offense. The Mavs were held to 16 points in the second half. That was a season low in a half by an opponent by 10 points against SDSU.Â
Â
Alex Arians scored a season-high 18 points to pace the Jacks on the offensive end in the win over Omaha. It also topped his previous best in a Summit League Tournament game of 15 he had in 2020 against Purdue Fort Wayne. Joining him in double digits was
Zeke Mayo who scored his tournament high of his career of 14 points. Mayo also had nine rebounds, more than doubling his total he had in a single tournament game in his previous three appearances.Â
Â
The Jackrabbits prepare to face either NDSU or South Dakota in the upcoming semifinal. SDSU split its matchups against the Bison during the regular season while sweeping the Coyotes. The Jacks are 4-1 all-time versus NDSU in the Summit League Tourney and 4-0 against USD.
Â
SDSU has returned to Sioux Falls a year after claiming the 2022 Summit League crown. The Jackrabbits earned victories over Omaha (87-79), South Dakota (83-60) and North Dakota State (75-69) en route to their sixth Summit League title. The postseason conference title was the first for SDSU since 2018.
