South Dakota State has the opportunity to continue its 2023 season as the Jackrabbits travel to Fort Collins, Colo., to participate in the 2023 National Invitational Softball Championship. The postseason event begins on Thursday, May 18, as SDSU takes on Tarleton State at 2 p.m. CT at Triple Crown Sports' Horsetooth Field.
Â
The NISC consists of an eight-team field. The tournament features two four-team pods that will play a double-elimination slate, with winners of the two winner's brackets and loser's brackets advancing to a single-elimination bracket. The semifinals will take place at 9 a.m. and noon mountain time, consecutively, on Red Rocks Field on May 20. The championship is scheduled for 3 p.m. that day.
Â
SDSU's four-team pod includes Tarleton State, Iowa and UC Davis. The Jackrabbits have already previously played Tarleton State twice this season.
Â
SDSU faced the Texans in the Oklahoma State/Tulsa Invitational on March 3 and March 4 earning 11-0 and 10-2 victories, respectively.
Shannon Lasey allowed just three hits in a complete game in the circle for the Jacks in game one. Also in the contest,
Alexa Williams had a team-high three hits and
Rozelyn Carrillo drove in three runs. In the March 4 meeting, SDSU was up 3-2 through six innings before scoring seven runs in the seventh to bust the game open.
Tori Kniesche and Williams combined to give up four hits to Tarleton while homers by Rozelyn and
Jocelyn Carrillo spearhead an SDSU win.
Â
SDSU is 3-10 all-time against the Hawkeyes. The two sides met in a neutral-site game in San Diego on Feb. 18 of the 2022 season which the Jacks lost 2-1. Prior to that, SDSU had a three-game win streak over Iowa. The Hawkeyes are 31-27 overall this season. The Jacks have never faced UC Davis. The Aggies are 29-20 overall entering the NISC.
Â
SDSU has previously competed in the NISC in 2018 and 2019. In 2018, the Jackrabbits competed in the Greeley portion of the event. The Jacks went 3-2 and lost in the tournament to eventual champion LMU. In 2019, SDSU played in three games in the Ames portion of the event and finished 1-2 overall.Â
