WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. — Purdue scored eight consecutive runs in the middle innings and went on to defeat South Dakota State, 10-7, in the opening game of a four-game college baseball season Friday night at Alexander Field.
Â
The Boilermakers moved to .500 on the season at 22-22 overall. SDSU dropped to 18-21 on the season.
Â
SDSU grabbed the early lead, scoring four times in the top of the third inning. A sacrifice fly by Luke Ira plated Dagen Schramm with an unearned run for the first tally and Dawson Parry followed with a three-run home run into the bullpen beyond the left-field fence.
Â
Jackrabbit starter Reece Arbogast retired all nine Purdue hitters the first time through the lineup, but ran into trouble in the home half of the fourth when the first four batters of the inning reached base, including a two-run double by Jake Parr. Reliever Jack Kruger uncorked a pair of wild pitches that allowed two runs to score and the Boilermakers made it a five-run inning on an RBI single by C.J. Valdez.
Â
Purdue added three more runs in the fifth inning, with all of the runs scoring on doubles by Connor Caskenette, Parr and Cam Thompson. Parr ended the night 3-for-4 with three runs batted in, while Thompson and Valdez were each 2-for-3 with a pair of RBIs.
Â
SDSU drew to within 8-5 after loading the bases with one out in the top of the seventh. Jess Bellows led off the frame with a single and later scored on a groundout off the bat of Reece Anderson.
Â
However, Purdue again responded with two runs of its own in the bottom of the seventh on a sacrifice fly by Valdez and RBI single by Thompson.
Â
The Jackrabbits put together one final rally in the ninth, scoring twice as Adam Benes delivered a pinch-hit RBI double and Anderson drove in his second run of the game with a single.
Â
Anderson and Drew Beazley each notched two of SDSU's eight hits. Purdue finished with 11 hits.
Â
Boilermaker starter Khal Stephen worked eight innings, striking out eight and walking one in improving to 7-2 on the season.
Â
Kruger took the loss for the Jackrabbits, while Brady Hawkins logged four innings and allowed three runs — two earned — with a strikeout and pair of walks.
