BROOKINGS, S.D. – The South Dakota State soccer team eyes a return to the pitch as the Jackrabbits announced their complete schedule for the 2023 season on Thursday. SDSU is slated to play 17 regular season matches ahead of The Summit League Championship tournament which begins on Oct. 27.Â
Â
The Jackrabbits head south at the start of August for their exhibition contests. SDSU will face Nebraska in Lincoln on Aug. 8 and Kansas in Lawrence on Aug. 11.Â
Â
South Dakota State begins its regular season with three of its first four matches at home. The Jackrabbits' season-opening weekend features contests against Manitoba (Aug. 17) and Augustana (Aug. 19). Followed by a match at Drake on Aug. 24, the Jacks return to Fishback Soccer Park to host Iowa State Aug. 27.Â
Â
SDSU remains in the non-conference portion of its schedule to begin September. The Jacks play at Utah State (Sept. 1) and Idaho State (Sept. 3) before returning to Brookings to compete in their final appearances on their home pitch before conference action. SDSU will take on Grand Canyon (Sept. 7) and Green Bay (Sept. 10). The Jackrabbits close out the non-conference slate on Sept. 15 by heading to Omaha to face Creighton.Â
Â
"It's really a great schedule for us, starting with our exhibitions against a Big Ten team and Big 12 team, to hosting some really good games here in Brookings at Fishback Soccer Park," said South Dakota State head coach
Brock Thompson. "We've always viewed the non-conference portion of our schedule as an opportunity to prepare us for conference play. I'm excited for this team to take on this challenge this next year."Â
Â
Thompson's squad begins Summit League play with a Sunday, Sept. 24, matchup at South Dakota. Four of SDSU's eight conference games take place in Brookings beginning with a Sept. 28 contest versus North Dakota State, followed by an Oct. 1 meeting versus North Dakota.Â
Â
A trip to Denver to face the Pioneers on Oct. 5 leads into the Jackrabbits' Senior Weekend. The Jacks host Omaha on Oct. 12 then face St. Thomas at Fishback on Oct. 15 to close out their regular season home slate. SDSU closes out its regular season schedule with matches at conference foes Oral Roberts (Oct. 19) and Kansas City (Oct. 22). Â
Â
"First, you want to qualify for tournament which is hard to do with only six of nine teams making it," Thompson said of facing the Summit League slate. "Every Summit League match is tightly contested and that goes back to the familiarity all of the teams in our conference have with each other."
Â
The Summit League tournament begins with quarterfinal and semifinal matches being played at the top two seeded sites on Oct. 27 and Oct. 29, respectively. The conference championship will be played at the highest seed remaining's home facility on Nov. 4. The First Round of the 2023 NCAA Division I Women's Soccer Championship begin on Nov. 10.
