KANSAS CITY, Mo. — South Dakota State senior forward
Maya Hansen was announced as one of 56 NCAA Women's Division I college soccer players named to the 2023 Hermann Trophy Watch List on Thursday. Â
Â
The Hermann Trophy, presented annually by the Missouri Athletic Club, is the nation's highest individual honor recognizing the National Player of the Year as determined by the voting of Division I coaches who are members of the United Soccer Coaches organization.Â
Â
"Maya is a player that tirelessly works to grow and develop her game," said South Dakota State head coach
Brock Thompson. "This honor is a perfect reflection of a player relentlessly pursuing high performance while being a great teammate and captain for our program."
Â
Hansen is South Dakota State's current program record holder in points (96) and is tied for the record for all-time goals scored with 39. Entering the 2023 season, Hansen's 96 career points rank her third at the DI level of women's soccer tailing only Arkansas' Anna Podojil (119) and Pittburgh's Amanda West (97). Her 39 goals are tied for third in the country trailing only Podojil's 45 and Emma Hawkins of Oklahoma's 40 goals.Â
Â
The Savage, Minn., native is a four-time all-conference performer and two-time United Soccer Coaches All-West Region Team selection. She was The Summit League's 2022 Offensive Player of the Year and has served as SDSU's Team Captain for two consecutive seasons.
Â
Fifth women's players will become Hermann Trophy semifinalists following completion of Division I All-America voting at the end of the fall season. December 6, the three women's finalists will be announced. The 2023 winners are revealed on Jan. 5, 2024, in a ceremony at the historic Missouri Athletic Club in St. Louis, Mo.
