KANSAS CITY, Mo. - South Dakota State volleyball nearly pulled off a reverse sweep over Kansas City Saturday afternoon but ultimately fell 3-2 at the Swinney Center. Set scores went 16-25, 23-25, 25-20, 25-23, 15-17.
The Jackrabbits held match point twice in the final set but the Roos came from behind with five of the final six points in the contest.
Only six total points separated the teams after the five-set affair. SDSU had a 12-9 edge in aces while the Roos had the advantage in kills (71-65) and blocks (9-6).
Outside hitters
Sylvie Zgonc and
Katie Van Egdom combined for big afternoons on both offense and defense. Zgonc finished with a career-high 21 kills to go with 13 digs while Van Egdom tallied 20 kills, 18 digs and two blocks.
SDSU's 12 aces falls three shy of the Jackrabbit record for aces in a five-set match.
Rylee Martin, a freshman, notched five aces, followed by Zgonc,
Elyse Winter and
Stella Winterfeld with two each and
Raegen Reilly with one.
Sydni Schetnan posted 11 kills, a career high, and added four digs and three blocks for the Jacks. Winter had eight kills, five digs and two ace serves. Reilly gave out 52 helpers, her most of the season, and contributed 16 digs, one kill and one block.
Libero
Stella Winterfeld tallied 25 digs and two assists. In addition to Martin's contributions from the service line, she recorded seven digs and three assists.
McKenna Moehrle led the Jackrabbits with four block assists.
KC's Odyssey Warren led all players with 26 kills. Leah Green paced the Roos' defense with 30 digs.
Set One: KC raced out to an 8-0 lead in the first set. Trailing 12-3, the Jacks took three of the next four points on a pair of Zgonc kills and a Martin ace. Down 15-6, SDSU put together a 6-1 run to pull within four. Van Egdom recorded a kill, assist and block assist during the run. The sides traded points until KC scored seven of the set's final nine points.
Set Two: Tied at eight in set two, the Roos notched six straight to take a 14-8 lead. Zgonc notched two kills to help the Jackrabbits back within two at 15-13. The Roos led 17-14 before a four-point SDSU run put the Jacks ahead 18-17. Kansas City went up against with four straight points and held off the Jacks the rest of the set.
Set Three: Following an 8-8 start to the third set, the Jacks built a 13-9 lead with kills from
Faith Saewert, Zgonc, Van Egdom and Reilly. KC made a 7-0 run to lead 17-14, then SDSU made another run to lead by two at 19-17. The Roos tied the set at 19-19. A 6-1 stretch with three kills from Schetnan won the third set for the Jacks.
Set Four: Kansas City scored the first four points of the fourth set, forcing the Jackrabbits to play from behind until tying the set at 11-11. KC regained the lead and was up 22-19 before the Jacks surged with a 6-1 run to force the fifth set. Two of Martin's aces came in the final run and Van Egdom had two kills.
Set Five: Kansas City took a 7-4 lead in the fifth set. SDSU got a kill and an ace from Winter to tie the set at 8-8, then Zgonc gave the Jackrabbits the 9-8 lead with a kill. Moehrle took part in back-to-back blocks to make it 11-10 for SDSU. The Jackrabbits led 14-12 when Kansas City came all the way back to win 17-15.
NOTES
- SDSU is 3-11 on the season and 1-1 in Summit League action. Kansas City is 11-3 overall and 2-0 in the conference.
- The Jackrabbits are now 13-12 all-time against the Roos.
UP NEXT
South Dakota State hosts Denver Thursday evening at Frost Arena. It will be SDSU's first match at home this season.
