The 2023 season was another one for the record books for the South Dakota State football team.

As a team, the Jackrabbits established single-season records for scoring with 560 points and for total yards with 6,748 en route to their second consecutive Football Championship Subdivision national title. SDSU's 15 victories also set a single-season mark, surpassing the team's 14 wins in 2022.

Also during the season, the Jackrabbits set a single-game record with 179 punt return yards in their Sept. 16 meeting with Drake at Target Field in Minneapolis.

Individually, kicker Hunter Dustman made good on 68 extra-point tries to break the previous single-season mark of 66 set by Chase Vinatieri in 2018. Dustman also tied Cole Frahm's single-season school record for points by a kicker with 122.

In individual statistical rankings, Gronowski and Davis were each national leaders. Gronowski paced the subdivision in passing efficiency with his rating of 179.7, while Davis led all players with 1,578 rushing yards, 18 rushing touchdowns and 19 total touchdowns.
Gronowski, the recipient of the Walter Payton Award as the top offensive player in the FCS, held top-10 rankings in six other offensive categories:

Fifth in passing yards per completion – 14.63
Seventh in passing yards – 3,058
Ninth in completion percentage – .681
Davis added a 10th-place showing in rushing yards per game, 105.2, while Jadon Janke was ninth with nine receiving touchdowns.
 Tucker Large placed third in the FCS rankings for punt returns with an average of 18.9 yards per attempt and linebacker Jason Freeman ranked third in fumble recoveries with three. Ryan Van Marel tied for ninth nationally with two blocked kicks.
