ROCHESTER, Minn. — Cody Vertin was victorious in the 200-yard breaststroke and added a runner-up finish in the 200 individual medley to lead the South Dakota State men's swimming and diving team on the final day of the Huskies Invite Saturday at the Rochester Rec Center.
A sophomore from Brookings, Vertin clocked a winning time of 2 minutes, 7.44 seconds in the 200 breaststroke after opening the day with a runner-up time of 1:54.40 in the 200 IM. Jackrabbit freshman Nik Keuser placed fifth in the 200 breaststroke with his time of 2:09.82.
Jack Ellison posted a pair of top-three individual finishes in the distance events, coming in second in the 1,650 freestyle (16:35.40) and third in the 500 freestyle (4:46.40). Teammate Kolden Kringen was seventh in both events with respective times of 17:16.38 and 4:51.65.
Also recording second-place efforts for the SDSU men in the timed finals were freshman and Watertown native Zavier Kranz in the 100 freestyle, 46.80 seconds, and Denilson Cyprianos in the 200 backstroke, 1:51.48. Kranz, who was edged by St. Cloud State's Justin Rowles by .03 seconds in the 100 freestyle, also turned in a fourth-place time in the 200 freestyle, 1:44.06, while Jackrabbit junior Aiden Carstensen placed fourth in the 200 backstroke with a time of 1:55.82.
Rounding out the list of top-three individual performers for the Jackrabbit men was junior Braxton McGrath with a third-place time of 1:55.16 in the 200 butterfly.
SDSU wrapped up the two-day meet with a third-place finish out of three teams. Host St. Cloud State finished atop the team standings with 2,269.5 points, followed by South Dakota with 2,165.5 points and the Jackrabbits at 1,946 points.
