South Dakota State heads to the Caribbean for its next three games as the Jackrabbits take part in the Cayman Islands Classic. The Jackrabbits' opening game in the Cayman Islands sees SDSU take on Duquesne at 12:30 p.m. on Sunday in John Gray Gymnasium.
The 2024 edition of the multi-team event held in the Cayman Islands also features Boise State, Hampton, Missouri State, High Point, Old Dominion and Boston College. Three teams in SDSU, Boise State and Duquesne were all NCAA Tournament teams a season ago. Boston College participated in the NIT last year while High Point, which finished runner-up in the CBI last season, is eighth in the CollegeInsider.com Mid-Major Top 25 Poll.Â
The Jackrabbits previously participated in the 2017 Cayman Islands Classic. That MTE saw SDSU fall in its first game to Wyoming, 77-65, then top Iowa by an 80-72 score. The Jacks defeated Buffalo 94-80 for a fifth-place finish. Reed Tellinghuisen was named to the All-Tournament Team.
SDSU is 4-1 overall after its 101-76 victory on Wednesday over Southern Miss at First Bank & Trust Arena. The Jacks led for more than 39 minutes and took advantage getting out to a 17-1 lead. SDSU had five double-digit scorers in the win. It was the first time the program topped the century mark in scoring since a 2022 Summit League Tournament victory over South Dakota.
SDSU's win over the Golden Eagles featured several feats. The Jacks 61% shooting percentage was the squad's best since a 69.2% clip in a January 2024 win over Montana State. SDSU out-rebounded Southern Miss 50-32. The rebound total was tied for the seventh most during SDSU's Division I era and most since the record of 60 the team set against Dakota Wesleyan last year.
Depth has been at the forefront of SDSU's success. Eight players average at least seven points while six average at least one assist per contest. All 11 Jacks that have seen time on the court this season average at least two rebounds per game.
Duquesne is 0-4 entering Sunday's matchup. Three of the Dukes' losses have been within seven points. First-year coach Dru Joyce III has double-digit scorers in Jake DiMichele and Tre Dinkins III.
