South Dakota State goes into its final game of its 2024-25 non-conference slate on Sunday when the Jackrabbits travel to Tuscaloosa to face Alabama. The Jacks take on the No. 5/6 Crimson Tide inside Coleman Coliseum at 2 p.m. SDSU opens the New Year on Jan. 2 at home versus Denver.
SDSU and Alabama square off in their third matchup in the last four seasons. Alabama is 3-0 all-time against SDSU. The two teams' first meeting in the 2012-13 season opener was won on a 3-pointer at the buzzer by the Tide, 70-67. The Jackrabbits and Crimson Tide played for the first time in nine years in November of 2021 which saw the Crimson Tide come away with a 104-88 victory.Â
The last meeting on Dec. 3, 2022, opened with Alabama gettting out a 20-point first half lead. The Jacks rallied to take a brief 53-51 advantage in the second half. The then No. 11/14 Crimson Tide eventually outlasted the Jackrabbits beating SDSU, 78-65. A pair of Jacks in Alex Arians and
Charlie Easley scored 17 points apiece in the contest.
Matthew Mors is the lone current Jackrabbit to have played in the last meeting. Â
SDSU has been paced in multiple categories by
Oscar Cluff. The Australian native ranks second in the nation in double-doubles (8), third in field goal percentage (71.4%) and eighth in rebounds per game (10.8).Â
Cluff was a Preseason All-Summit League Second Team selection along with guard
Kalen Garry. The sophomore has scored double figures in consecutive games while going a combined 9-for-17 from the field and dishing out eight assists.
Redshirt freshman
Joe Sayler has been SDSU's leading scorer in the Jackrabbits' previous three contests. The guard has been in double digits in nine of 12 games this season including five straight outings. His 13.3 points per game clip is the most by an SDSU freshman since 2017-18.
The Jackrabbits, 9-5 overall this season, are 1-21 all-time against nationally-ranked teams heading into Sunday's matchup. The Crimson Tide are 10-2 overall and coming off a season that ended in the Final Four. Alabama features the third best team rebounding average (45.1 RPG) and fourth highest scoring offense in the nation (88.7 PPG).
