South Dakota State and Denver get their Summit League schedules started on Thursday when the two sides clash inside First Bank & Trust Arena with tipoff scheduled for 8 p.m. The last time the foes met was in the 2024 Summit League Championship game.Â
The Jackrabbits raced out to a double-digit lead just seven minutes into the title contest and closed out the 2024 tournament championship with a 76-68 victory on March 12 over the Pioneers. SDSU won its seventh Summit League tournament title en route to claiming its seventh NCAA Division I Tournament appearance.Â
Both teams have seen plenty of changes, with all five of SDSU's starters from that game replaced, along with three for Denver. SDSU is 10-7 all-time in Summit-League opening matchups. The Jackrabbits went 12-4 in conference action a season ago on their way to earning their ninth regular season championship, tied for most with Valparaiso in The Summit League's history.Â
The Pioneers were the seven seed in the conference tournament last season, going 6-10 in league play, while Denver finished the year with a 17-17 record. The Pios are currently 6-9 overall this season heading into Thursday's contest in Brookings. Newcomers Nicholas Shogbonyo (15.1 PPG) and Sebastian Akins (12.3) are two of Denver's three leading scorers, while they're joined by sophomore DeAndre Craig (13.2) averaging double figures.Â
The Jacks had a 12-game win streak over the Pios ended with a 99-80 defeat in Denver on Jan. 13 last season. SDSU responded on Feb. 22 with a 97-70 win in its home confines. South Dakota State has won 18 of the last 20 meetings against Denver. The Jacks are 13-2 in the series at home which includes winning nine straight in Brookings.
SDSU is 9-6 overall after a 105-82 loss to No. 5/6 Alabama on Sunday. The Jacks are one of three Summit League squads among the top 150 schools in the NET Rankings at 112th. They're joined by NDSU (89th) and St. Thomas (107th).
Leading the Jacks their last time out was
Oscar Cluff who had 21 points and 15 rebounds at Alabama on Sunday. His nine double-doubles this year rank second in Division I men's basketball.
