LINCOLN, Neb. - South Dakota State volleyball's memorable season came to an end Friday evening with a 3-0 loss to No. 8 Miami in the First Round of the NCAA Tournament at the Bob Devaney Sports Center.
The Jackrabbits wrap the year with a 27-3 record, its best in the Division I era. The Hurricanes advance to Round Two at 22-10 and will take on the winner of Nebraska-Florida A&M.
Sophomore
Sylvie Zgonc posted nine kills but was held to .000 hitting by the Miami defense. She also tallied six digs and a pair of blocks for the Jacks.
Sydni Schetnan posted a team-best .211 clip and had six kills to go with five total blocks.
Katie Van Egdom chipped in five kills.
Rylee Martin posted a double-double with 12 assists and 10 digs to lead SDSU in both categories. Libero
Rachel Wieber matched Martin's 10 digs and notched a service ace.
Camryn Honn dished eight assists and recorded nine digs.
Flormarie Heredia Colon put down 21 kills at a .292 clip for the Hurricanes and notched 13 digs. Grace Lopez also had a double-double - 12 kills and 10 digs.
Set scores against Miami went 25-17, 25-23, 25-15. The Jackrabbits struggled to find consistent offense throughout the match, notching only 26 total kills to Miami's 47.
Set one: The opening set was close early, but the Jacks did not score consecutive points until a 3-0 stretch late to cut the game to 23-16.
Set two: SDSU looked to turn the tables in set two, opening up an 11-3 lead over the Hurricanes. A kill by
Madison Burr and an ace by Wieber highlighted a 6-0 Jackrabbit run. Miami stormed back to take the lead at 15-14 with a 7-0 stretch of their own. The Jacks trailed 19-17, then worked back to lead again on kills from Zgonc and Van Egdom and an ace by Zgonc. SDSU led at 23-22 before Miami finished the set with three straight points.
Set three: An 8-1 Hurricanes run in the final set pushed Miami way out in front of the Jackrabbits. Zgonc, Schetnan and
Alyssa Groves managed kills over the final stretch but the Jacks could not get back into the set.
