Game Notes |
South Dakota State makes a trip to the Lone Star State for the second consecutive year as the Jackrabbits travel to Denton to take part in North Texas' Tracey Beard College Classic. The Jackrabbits make their way to Denton two years after having a tournament appearance on the North Texas campus wiped away due to weather during what was supposed to be the UNT Invitational in late February of 2022.
Â
SDSU will participate in five games over the course of three days at the Mean Green's Lovelace Stadium. The Jackrabbits begin play on Friday at 1:30 p.m. against Texas A&M Commerce. They follow that by facing Missouri, a team that has opened the season 5-0 and jumped into multiple national polls and rank as high as 11th.Â
Â
The Jackrabbits will play Mizzou again to open Saturday at 11 a.m. SDSU closes the tournament out by playing North Texas twice. The Jacks take on the Mean Green at 4 p.m. Saturday, then end their appearance in Denton with a scheduled 1:30 p.m. first pitch on Sunday.Â
Â
South Dakota State began its 2024 campaign at the Fresno State Kickoff Classic last week. The Jackrabbits went 3-2 in their lone trip to California this season. SDSU defeated host Fresno State 20-8 in the season opener in six innings, then the next day lost a 3-2 contest in eight innings to the Bulldogs. The Jacks split a pair of games against Santa Clara, while they closed out their showing by beating CSU Bakersfield in five innings by a 9-1 score.
Â
The Jackrabbits matched their season high hit mark of 2023 in the season opener by recording 15 off the Fresno State pitching staff. Five Jacks recorded double-digit hits in the game while
Akayla Barnard,
Emma Osmundson and
Lindsey Culver had three RBIs apiece. The squad's 13 walks drawn were the most in a single game in program history, topping the record of 12 set by SDSU a season ago.
Â
SDSU was boosted to 2-0 following the team's 1-0 victory over Santa Clara on Feb. 9. The Jackrabbits were buoyed by a one-hitter by starter
Tori Kniesche in the circle. She struck out 13 batters and walked just one in the victory.
Emma Osmundson produced SDSU's only two hits in the game which included an RBI double in the third inning.
Â
Osmundson was named The Summit League's TicketSmarter Peak Performer of the Week on Monday. The senior outfielder is hitting a team-best .438 after the first five games of the season going 7-for-17 at the plate. She hit a home run, scored five runs and drove in six RBIs to go along with a team-leading .813 slugging percentage.Â
Â
The victory over Santa Clara served as the 400th of SDSU head coach
Kristina McSweeney's during her career at the NCAA level. In the midst of her second season at SDSU, McSweeney spent a majority of her head coaching tenure -- which has spanned 12 seasons -- at Arkansas Tech at the Division II level. McSweeney currently stands at 401-207 (.660) for an overall record.
Â
The Jackrabbits have favorable numbers among fellow softball teams at the Division I level. SDSU owns the most walks among programs in the nation with 32 on the season. SDSU's .993 fielding percentage ranks eighth in the country while their 11 doubles in five games ranks 15th overall.
Â
Based off the first week's worth of national rankings, SDSU is slated to play six nationally ranked teams this season. Along with that, another two are receiving votes.Â
