DENTON, Texas — South Dakota State softball out-hit both its opponents on Saturday, however mistakes cost the Jackrabbits in both their games at North Texas' Lovelace Stadium. The Jacks began the day with a 7-1 defeat to No. 11 Missouri and fell 9-4 in the night cap to the host Mean Green. Â
Â
Game 1 (vs. Missouri)
Mizzou scored seven runs in the first three innings and never wavered in its 7-1 victory over SDSU.Â
Â
The Jackrabbits had an opportunity in the top of the first when freshman
Akayla Barnard hit a one-out triple, but she'd be stranded at third after a strikeout and groundout ended the frame. SDSU starting pitcher
Shannon Lasey gave up two walks and had an infield error behind her to load the bases, however she was able to get out of the first with two strikeouts and kept the margin scoreless.Â
Â
The Tigers struck first in the second. Two walks, a sacrifice bunt, wild pitch and fielder's choice led Mizzou to its first run. The third inning saw the nationally-ranked Tigers take advantage of three walks, two errors and three hits to score six runs en route to a 7-0 edge.Â
Â
SDSU scored one run in the fifth.
Cheyanne Masterson and
Jocelyn Carrillo each singled, while Barnard walked, before an
Emma Osmundson single plated Masterson. The Jacks had the bases loaded, but had two consecutive strikeouts to end any possible rally.Â
Â
Lasey took the loss in the circle for the Jackrabbits. She gave up three hits in 2 2/3 innings and allowed three earned runs.
Alexa Williams pitched 3 1/3 innings of scoreless relief.Â
Â
Game 2 (vs. North Texas)
The Jackrabbits again out-hit their foe in the Mean Green, but North Texas took advantage of its opportunities in a 9-4 win.Â
Â
South Dakota State got out a 1-0 lead in the first. Osmundson hit an RBI double to score
Mia Jarecki to get the Jackrabbits off to a strong start.Â
Â
The Mean Green responded with four runs in the second. Three walks, along with an RBI single and RBI double, propelled the host's ahead for good.Â
Â
Osmundson plated another run in the fifth when her RBI single brought in Barnard. However, North Texas scored another three runs on a hit and three walks in the bottom of the frame.Â
Â
Jackrabbit starter
Tori Kniesche took the loss and dropped to 2-3 on the season. She pitched five innings and gave up seven runs (six earned) and walked 11 while striking out seven.
Hailey Herman threw an inning and gave up two unearned runs.Â
Â
Lindsey Culver had a team-high three hits for the SDSU lineup. Osmundson had two hits and two RBIs, while Jarecki also recorded two hits.Â
