South Dakota State continues its two-week stretch of travel as the Jackrabbits take part in Arkansas' Wooo Pig Classic beginning at 4 p.m. Thursday against the host Razorbacks.Â
Â
The Jackrabbits are in the midst of the first of two trips that span a stretch of approximately two weeks. SDSU plays six games in the Wooo Pig Classic, competing in two games apiece on Friday and Saturday before its finale Sunday morning. SDSU also faces Southeast Missouri and Florida Atlantic during its visit to Fayetteville.Â
Â
The Jacks just came off a five-game appearance at Central Arkansas' Michelle Short Memorial Classic. The Jackrabbits also spend two weeks away from Brookings on their next road trip. They are slated to play a series at Duke (March 8-9) and a doubleheader at Florida State (March 12), while SDSU also participates in Kentucky's John Cropp Classic from March 15-17.
Â
SDSU played a doubleheader Tuesday versus No. 3 Oklahoma State and fell 11-2 and 10-0 to the Cowgirls.
Â
South Dakota State is coming off a 3-2 appearance in Conway, Arkansas, at Central Arkansas' Farris Field. The Jackrabbits won both their contests versus Purdue and picked up a win against the host Bears, 8-1. SDSU lost 4-3 to Southern Illinois on a walk-off, two-out two-run home run. The Jacks also lost their tournament finale to Central Arkansas, 6-4. SDSU had the bases loaded with one out in the top of the seventh down 6-4, but were unable to extend the ballgame.
Â
The Jackrabbits continue a grueling schedule against nationally-ranked teams. SDSU played then No. 11 Missouri twice at North Texas' tournament and fell in meetings, 4-3 and 7-1. This week features two ranked teams in Oklahoma State and No. 14 Arkansas, along with a Florida Atlantic team at the Wooo Pig Classic that has received votes in national polls recently.
Â
SDSU starting pitcher
Tori Kniesche earned The Summit League's Peak Pitcher of the week honor on Monday from the conference. Kniesche won her two starts in Conway and made a relief appearance. She pitched two complete games and gave up an earned run in each win against Purdue and Central Arkansas. She struck out a combined 26 hitters on the weekend while walking three and giving up nine hits.
Â
The Jackrabbits have been bouyed at the plate through 17 games by a trio of mainstays in their lineup. Senior
Emma Osmundson, who was The Summit League's Peak Performer of the Week after the first week of play, continues to pace SDSU in hitting. She's batting .455 with team highs in home runs (3), RBIs (15), doubles (9) and slugging percentage (.782). Osmundson is second in the nation individually in doubles, 16th in total bases (43) and 12th in hits (25).
Â
Senior outfielder
Lindsey Culver is hitting .373 on the season. She hit home runs in consecutive games in Conway and had six RBIs. Junior infielder
Mia Jarecki is batting .340 after two multi-hit performances in the UCA tournament.
Â
The Jackrabbits have one of the most experienced lineups in Division I softball. SDSU lost just one starter from a season ago in its lineup and returned 14 letterwinners. Kniesche was the 2023 Summit League Pitcher of the Year while she was joined on the All-Summit League First Team by Jarecki,
Jocelyn Carrillo and
Rozelyn Carrillo. Osmundson was a Second Team all-conference pick a season ago, while Culver has previously earned All-Summit accolades in her career. Honorable mention choices last year that returned were
Shannon Lasey,
Alexa Williams along with Culver.
